À propos de cet audio
“Of every book written by anybody associated with the Trump administration, in any way, [this] is absolutely the one to read.” —Rachel Maddow
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER | A celebrated foreign policy expert and key impeachment witness reveals how declining opportunity has set America on the grim path of modern Russia—and draws on her personal journey out of poverty, as well as her unique perspectives as an historian and policy maker, to show how we can return hope to our forgotten places.
"This book has a miraculous quality.... As a memoir this is hard to put down; if you are seeking a better American future you should pick it up.”—Timothy Snyder, New York Times best-selling author of On Tyranny
Fiona Hill grew up in a world of terminal decay. The last of the local mines had closed, businesses were shuttering, and despair was etched in the faces around her. Her father urged her to get out of their blighted corner of northern England: “There is nothing for you here, pet,” he said.
The coal-miner’s daughter managed to go further than he ever could have dreamed. She studied in Moscow and at Harvard, became an American citizen, and served three U.S. Presidents. But in the heartlands of both Russia and the United States, she saw troubling reflections of her hometown and similar populist impulses. By the time she offered her brave testimony in the first impeachment inquiry of President Trump, Hill knew that the desperation of forgotten people was driving American politics over the brink—and that we were running out of time to save ourselves from Russia’s fate. In this powerful, deeply personal account, she shares what she has learned, and shows why expanding opportunity is the only long-term hope for our democracy.

Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come. Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life.

At War with Ourselves is the story of helping a disruptive President drive necessary shifts in U.S. foreign policy at a critical moment in history. McMaster entered an administration beset by conflict and the hyper partisanship of American politics. With the candor of a soldier and the perspective of a historian, McMaster rises above the fray to lay bare the good, the bad, and the ugly of Trump’s presidency and give listeners insight into what a second Trump term would look like.

From the KGB to the Kremlin: a multidimensional portrait of the man at war with the West. Where do Vladimir Putin's ideas come from? How does he look at the outside world? What does he want, and how far is he willing to go? The great lesson of the outbreak of World War I in 1914 was the danger of misreading the statements, actions, and intentions of the adversary. Today, Vladimir Putin has become the greatest challenge to European security and the global world order in decades.

Donald Trump will be president again, whether he is on the ballot or not. That is because Trumpism is overtaking the Republican Party and will mount a vigorous comeback, potentially in the hands of a savvier successor. This prophecy will come true, according to Miles Taylor, if we do not learn the lessons of the recent past. With the 2024 election approaching, the formerly “Anonymous” official is back with bombshell revelations and a sobering national forecast. Taylor predicts what could happen inside “Trump 2.0,” the White House of a more competent and more formidable copycat.

Packed with new reporting, Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party tracks Trump’s improbable journey from disgraced and defeated former president to the dominant force, yet again, in the Republican Party. From his exile in Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump has become more extreme, vengeful, and divorced from reality than he was on January 6, 2021. His meddling damaged the GOP’s electoral prospects for third consecutive election in 2022. His legal troubles are mounting. Yet he re-emerged as the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

For almost three decades, Fox News has not only made political careers (see: President Donald J. Trump) but also fundamentally altered the political landscape of the United States. It is a truism: as Fox goes, so goes the nation—into further divisiveness and awash in fake news, a gleefully polarizing company. But just as Fox has pushed America apart, now it too is coming apart. As is the family dynasty behind it.

By the time she became US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch had seen her share of corruption, instability, and tragedy in developing countries. But it came as a shock when, in early 2019, she was recalled from her post after a smear campaign by President Trump’s personal attorney and his associates—men operating outside of normal governmental channels, and apparently motivated by personal gain. Her courageous participation in the subsequent impeachment inquiry earned Yovanovitch the nation’s respect, and her dignified response to the president’s attacks won our hearts.

Rory Stewart was an unlikely politician. He was best known for his two-year walk across Asia—in which he crossed Afghanistan, essentially solo, in the months after 9/11—and for his service, as a diplomat in Iraq, and Afghanistan. But in 2009, he abandoned his chair at Harvard University to stand for a seat in Parliament, representing the communities and farms of the Lake District and the Scottish border—one of the most isolated and beautiful districts in England.

They Want to Kill Americans is the first detailed look into the heart of the active Trump-led insurgency, setting the stage for a second nation-wide rebellion on American soil. This is a chilling and deeply researched early warning to the nation from a counterterrorism intelligence professional: America is primed for a possible explosive wave of terrorist attacks and armed confrontations that aim to bring about a Donald Trump led dictatorship.

Smart solutions for our challenging times
Knowledgeable and experienced in analyzing what poor policy and tough economic conditions does to people, Fiona clearly illustrates what needs to be done, going forward, a severe challenge at this time of political upheaval. A good “ read” .

Will democracy survive?
I appreciated her understanding of a key difference the UK and the US--how place and social class have been the primary impediments for Brits to pursue educational and career opportunities while in the US, the primary impediment is race. Now if only we could heal these divides and avoid slipping into autocracy.

How to avoid populist leaders like trump & putin
Dr. Fiona Hill narrates her book delightfully with a sometimes deadpan humour, emotion, and clarity. Her book is so rich with information she has gleaned from her life and work in the UK, Russia, and US that I was engaged throughout. Her description of her upbringing in a mining town in the north of England made clear to me the near improbability of being able to lift oneself up by the bootstraps from the depths of poverty. Without her drive, without "handouts," and without "hands up," she could not have accomplished what she has. If we can even the playing field so that those in poverty have the same access to education as the privileged, this will negate the divided countries that lead to populist leaders like trump and putin. And she ends by giving practical examples that all of us can do to help make sure our democracies thrive and that everyone can participate in our economies equitably. Highly recommended!

Fiona is one of the good ones
Fiona tells a relatable back story, and bears witness to the horror show that was the Trump presidency. Her advice at the end is powerful, backed up by a life of experience and made me wish the people that I encountered in my eary life had heard.

Important personal and policy memoir
I subscribed to Audible to listen to Fiona Hill read her book. (My mother is from a nearby town in County Durham.)
While most readers will skip to the parts about Hill’s interactions with former President Trump — and those chapters deserve to be read — her broader message about the origins of populism, forgotten people, and forgotten places needs to be considered and understood.
Hill’s comparative analysis of struggling areas in the U.S., U.K., and Russia and the implications for domestic and foreign policy are especially insightful.
I would extend her points to Canada, where I am from. We do not have the same accent or class discrimination as in the U.K., but we too have, in our own way, forgotten places and people. Will the solutions Hill proposes gain traction here? Dear reader: it’s up to you.

Absolutely fantastic!
What a marvellously insightful and engaging book! I loved the comparisons between the coal country of northwest England and the US rust belt and small-town America. I appreciated the precise conclusions and recommendations on what could be improved as well as clear-minded observations on what doesn’t work. Well done!

Populism explained
I could not stop listening to this book. Through her personal story (and voice) Fiona Hill explains populism in a broader context, its impact on the US through Trump as well as other countries and its threats to society. The idea that the US and Russia are today more alike than we realize is a hard notion for me as a boomer to get my head around. Based on her lifetime of experience Hill explains how indeed this is the case. I appreciated the analytic approach she took to the book as well as her style and humor. It's a "Treasure".

Very inspiring woman
As a poor working class French speaking Canadian woman in her 70’s I could relate in many ways to Ms Hill’s experience. I was so amazed by her presentation at the Trump impeachment trial that I wanted to find out more about this self-assured, outspoken woman. It is very inspiring to see how she is encouraging others to give back and help the underprivileged as I once was. Well written and well read. Thank you
