About this listen
One of the 2019 Amazon.com Best Books of the Year
"In this charming listen, narrator Therese Plummer portrays Cassie Hanwell - a confident, talented firefighter whose solitary life is upended when her estranged mother asks her to relocate to Boston.... A wonderful story of forgiveness, friendship, love, and hope." (AudioFile Magazine)
From the New York Times best-selling author of How to Walk Away comes a stunning new audiobook about courage, hope, and learning to love against all odds.
Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's a total pro at other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to give up her whole life and move to Boston, Cassie suddenly has an emergency of her own.
The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew - even one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the infatuation-inspiring rookie, who doesn't seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can't think about that. Because love is girly, and it’s not her thing. And don’t forget the advice her old captain gave her: Never date firefighters. Cassie can feel her resolve slipping...and it means risking it all - the only job she’s ever loved, and the hero she’s worked like hell to become.
Katherine Center's Things You Save in a Fire is a heartfelt and healing tour de force about the strength of vulnerability, the nourishing magic of forgiveness, and the life-changing power of defining courage, at last, for yourself.

"Oh, how I love Katherine Center’s writing…and her newest novel is a gem...a story that reminds us that the word emergency has, at its heart, a new beginning. Just read it, and thank me later.” (Jodi Picoult, New York Times best-selling author)

Worth the read!
As a female firefighter I could really relate to the main character. I loved her toughness. Her tenacity. Her strength. And eventually her tender side.
I really enjoyed the story!

An easy read
I enjoyed the story and found myself excited to get back to it but… I found the narration to be tremendously over acted.

Well read and well written
Loved the themes of love, vulnerability, courage, fear and connection...had me thinking and pondering after I read it. The narrator has the perfect young adult "tone" to her. Will listen to it a second time!

Wow!
I am listening to all of the author's books. I love her writing. Same style of writing in each book, builds the story and about 2/3's of the way through brings the story powerfully home. And the narrators are excellent too.

Typical Romance Novel
This is your typical romance novel. Very predictable but good for an easy read. Narrator’s voice was okay but didn’t like how she portrayed the male characters.
