About this listen

"Gudenkauf proves herself the master of the smart, suspenseful small-town thriller that gets right under your skin." (Gilly Macmillan, New York Times best-selling author of The Nanny)

Everyone has a secret they’ll do anything to hide....

Twenty-five years ago, the body of 16-year-old Eve Knox was found in the caves near her home in small-town Grotto, Iowa - discovered by her best friend, Maggie, and her sister, Nola. There were a handful of suspects, including her boyfriend, Nick, but without sufficient evidence the case ultimately went cold.

For decades Maggie was haunted by Eve’s death and that horrible night. Now a detective in Grotto, and seven months pregnant, she is thrust back into the past when a new piece of evidence surfaces and the case is reopened. As Maggie investigates and reexamines the clues, secrets about what really happened begin to emerge. But someone in town knows more than they’re letting on, and they’ll stop at nothing to keep the truth buried deep.

Fast-paced and intriguing!

Another great audiobook by Heather Gudenkauf. Brittany Pressley does a fantastic job of bringing the different characters’ personalities to life. So much suspense and a solid storyline.

Keeps you guessing until the end!

Author wrote another great story. Similar plot of missing/dead best friend but otherwise all different. Goosebump worthy realistic characters and plot twists. Hard to stop listening.
Narrator managed another very impressive range of voices for kids and women, only disappointment was that all men sounded the same age/personality. She needs to improve that but doesn't wreck the story. Great job!

Best book I’ve “read” in a long time.

Best book of this genre that I’ve heard/read in a long time. Thought it was interesting, and liked the attention to detail in her writing. Sometimes it lagged a tiny bit, and some repetitive use of words but for the most part extremely enjoyable. I especially liked the end, with the idea of her dad and how she says the thing. And she has to keep saying the thing. (Trying not to spoil.) Sad but happy.

Loved this!

This is the second book I've listened to by this author. This is full of suspense & twists....a must for my psycho-thrillers. And the narrator does such a great job jumping between characters. Brittan Pressley is one of my favorite narrators. Have a listen...you won't regret it! :)

Very Disappointing

Spoiler alert!!! I am glad this was an audio book rather than a book I had to read as I would have been SOOOOO very disappointed in the wasted hours spent reading.

Even with that said, I skipped like 4 hours of the book because it was dragging and didn’t really keep my attention, so I skipped to the last four chapters.

What kind of cop are you that you see the crime scene photos and still think of the wrong murderer. You’ll understand that comment at the end of the book. What a shitty cop that you collect evidence on three people to plant in order to frame whichever one you believe, not through actual investigation, but your own opinion, the murderer to be if DNA couldn’t get you the answers and the fact that the main leads’ father also hid evidence which pointed to a potential killer because he didn’t want that person to go to jail is also very disappointing. How about actually investigate the crime. You are telling me, no one in this small I know everyone town found the second shoe for 20 years and then by chance some kids are in the caves and find it 20 years later? The crime could have been solved years ago, so with this thought it doesn’t add intrigue to the story.

As a cop the lead should know that child molesters don’t stop at one but instead of actually trying to get the molester away from other girls by coming forward after she was grown or even investigating so she could get evidence to get him off the streets she did nothing!!! I know that it’s hard for victims to move forward and for some they just want to forget and not bring light to the incident, but this so called cop even said she was trying to keep taps on him and still failed because he was coaching young high school girls and still she did nothing except tell him that he would go down for it AT THE END OF THE BOOK!!!!

Not one of the characters was likeable, quite the opposite actually, even the main lead. If she had been molested, came forward, and was struggling to find the killer while her molester was still mulling around in town, i may have liked her character more.
