Publisher's Summary

The seventh and final volume in Jeffrey Archer’s New York Times bestselling Clifton Chronicles series, This Was a Man, brings the epic saga of the Clifton family’s love, loss, and ambition to a dazzling conclusion.

Harry Clifton’s story began in 1920, as a dock worker in England, and now he is set to write his magnum opus. As he reflects on his days, the lives of his family continue to unfold, unravel, and intertwine in ways no one could have imagined . . .

Harry’s wife Emma, who just completed her time at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, receives a surprise call from Margaret Thatcher. Meanwhile, Giles Barrington discovers a shocking truth about his wife, Karin. Sebastian Clifton becomes chairman of Farthings Kaufman bank, but only after Hakim Bishara’s abrupt resignation. Sebastian’s daughter Jessica is expelled from school, but her aunt Grace comes to the rescue. And Lady Virginia, who is set to flee the country to avoid her creditors, finds an opportunity to clear her debts after the Duchess of Hertford dies—and a way to finally trump the Cliftons and Barringtons.

Amazing series

The Clifton Chronicles are addictive. The narration is perfect and the stories are spellbinding. Each book is better than the last.

Brilliant

A beautiful last chapter to the series. I was unable to take a break between any of the seven books of the Clifton Chronicles because each book was better than the previous one .. culminating in This Was a Man. A thoroughly enjoyable literary journey.

Truly outstanding

What an extraordinary end to an unforgettable series. The authors mastery at storytelling is astounding. I am an avid reader but had not read Jeffrey Archer since Kane and Abel. I decided to read Heads You Win and I was hooked. The Clifton Chronicles has moved to the top of my extensive list of favourites in this genre. The pen is most certainly mightier than the sword!

The Final Clifton Chronicle

A tear-jerking grand finale to the marvellous series of novels that disappointed only in how rushed and crushingly final the series wrap-up unfolded. It might be that Lord Archer wanted to start his Inspector Warwick series more than he wanted us, the engrossed, to continue loving his characters...even the one that we love to hate (I'm looking at you, Dowager Duchess!!).

Under no circumstances should you listen to these novels out of their running order. Archer makes us feel a part of the 70-year lifetime of the Clifton/Barrington world.

Thank you, Lord Archer.

Memorable Ending to Clifton Chronicles

I so enjoyed the series! The writing and storyline were flawless as was the reading of the books. I will long remember the main characters of the book, especially Harry Clifton.
