New magic world.
Loved the whole story. Narration was great and Kim as usual writes a great story. Different magic rules than the hollows but would definitely get the second. Of course I’d also buy the new hollows book when it’s out

Kim Harrison never disappoints
I was sucked in as quickly as I was with the hollow series. I was expecting some conceptual overlap but so far it is not at all derivative. Well done as always Ms. Harrison!!

Good world building, it’s a little YA though
Love the world building as usual with Harrison’s writing, but omg, the almost willful naïveté and “poor under achieving me” of the FMC is grating. I wish Harrison would learn how to write a new MC’s, there’s familiar writing style, and then there’s annoying laziness. Or bad advice from an editor.

Huge KH AND MG fan, not this storyline
I’m a very big fan of the Hollows series and really love M Gavin’s narration. This story is not good. It starts on a thin time frame and positioning. I didn’t really connect with where I as the reader was in the world. I got mid story and the gory end to the dog was the end for me. Sorry KH, I’ll go back and listen to the Hollows to soothe my heart.

Characters are caricatures of childish characteristics.
The overall story arc was good, as was the system of magic. The characters were profoundly shallow, driven by the most basic and simple childish and emotional impulses, without a single rational thought between them.
