Publisher's Summary

Joseph Boyden's first novel, Three Day Road, was a Today Show Book Club selection. Through Black Spruce is the exceptional follow-up to his acclaimed debut.

Cree bush pilot Will Bird lies comatose in a hospital while his wayward niece Annie arrives to sit in silent vigil by his side. Slowly their stories reveal two people previously separated by great distances, beaten and broken, and searching for some sense of where they belong in the world.

Characters so believably human, beautifully flawed

I found it impossible not to forgive the characters' self-destructive behaviors, seeing their noble intentions as the story unfolds. Will's perseverance in the face of ultimate tragedy and loss is so well crafted by Boyden, it is as if you are in Bird's mind, suffering along as he seeks inner peace and redemption.

Excellent

An excellent read! A captivating story and well-narrated. My favourite in the series. Boyden never disappoints.
