About this listen
"Narrator Jennifer Hale's outstanding performance brings this story of alien invasion to life.... Hale's range of differentiation is masterly as she animates all the quirky characters Kira meets. From the rough, snarky slang of ex-military woman to the half-mad musings of a human 'ship mind,' every unique voice enhances the listening experience." (AudioFile magazine, Earphones Award winner)

A captivating adventure. But...
I absolutely loved the main protagonist. Within a very short time I felt I knew her, I understood how she perceived the univers and how she was affected by what was happening to her. I could feel and understand her fear, confusion, curiosity and happiness. In this story, the author has created a truly compelling, multi-faceted, and well rounded character. The supporting characters are similarly constructed. Even though they are mostly sci-fi stock (the space marine, the roughing, rouge smuggler, etc) they are still complex and distinct. They do a fine job moving the story along.
If your looking for the “sci” part of sci-fi, you will not be disappointed. Though the technology and theory behind it are not centre-stage, they are extensively developed (there is an appendix that dives deeper into it) and most definitely add to the story.
However.
At more than thirty hours, this book was longer than it had to be. One of the author’s Eragon books was of similar length but it was required to tell the story, nothing there was padding the runtime, so to speak. This book however, felt stretched out. The episodic adventures started to feel repetitive and I think a few crises could have been left out and not only would the story not suffer, but it would feel far more fluid. I think that twenty-five hours could have told the story better.
Notwithstanding this, I very much enjoyed this book and am looking forward to seeing what Christopher Paolini comes up with next.

A Thrilling Tale!
I'm usually not a huge sci-fi person but this story was incredible! Paolini did a phenomenal job at creating a captivating tale and it was brought to life so thoroughly by Hale.

it was alright
It was a pretty alright space novel, I can think of others I would have preferred to listen to. It took guts to go in a completely different direction for Paolini, and it turned out alright. He also doesn't write women too poorly so props for that.

Great story, lovable characters, and grounded in real scientific theories. Incredible!
The fact that he was able to write an amazing story that feels futuristic, has great characters and has the tech based around real science was incredible. He didn't use fantastical things to explain away anything, nor did he use common tropes imo. Everything he did made it feel like we could grasp these technologies is the future. This book made me feel conflicted about our future as an intergalactic race, but also hopeful that we won't lose our humanity. Jennifer did fantastic at capturing the essence and emotions of the differing characters while not going over the top! Thank you Christopher and Jennifer for expanding my mind! I will definitely recommend 🙏

10/10 Will Read/Listen Again
To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars is both beautifully written and narrated. Paolini's SciFi world building is impeccable in this fast paced exploration of the galaxy and the inner universe of humanity. He grapples with themes of autonomy and forgiveness, wrestling through how human it is to err all while intergalactic stakes are on the line. Simply a fantastic listen that I could not turn off.
