This is a great start to a new series. Fantastic narration.

It’s a bit horny as others have said. The rules of the world are interesting. A domineering pantheon watches over the people of this land quite carefully. The gods are quite hands on, more than I would have expected and that’s an interesting aspect to this series. I quite enjoyed it though it starts a little more slowly. The characters are being developed and the town guards are well written. They remind me a bit of sappers in the series “gardens of the moon”, just in how their dialogue is written.

Love this narrator. He has a unique narrating style that works very well for military and his narration breathes extra life into the characters. I’d swear theses characters were written with his narration in mind, maybe it true…and it’s a good thing tools. This gentleman narrator has landed in my top 5. He has an excellent range and surprisingly efficacious at producing female voices that are different enough from each other and not distracting. I always for left it’s a dude narrating the women, takes some skill to do that.

This series has the chance of blooming into an epic in the genre. If you view the differences and the seeming rigidity of the rules governing the world as peculiarities of the pantheon itself, then it creates a hole new range of questions. By constraining the world, if the author begins to break down those rules, it will create a very dynamic scenario for a growing cast of characters. And the town guard roll…I was worried it was going to turn into almost a punishment for our main character. Surprises abound.
