A satisfying adventure story

I always like a main character who can pull through in ways that others might not have expected of them, and it works well in a space adventure, where the dangers to be faced have a combination of technological, human, and space travel dimensions. Being a female myself, I liked having a female heroine that wasn’t confronting sexism, just plain, ordinary spacer troubles! Kudos to the voice artist who read this aloud, I believed all her changes and pitch and diction for the different characters in the story.

A great space adventure

Elizabeth Moon’s ability to tell a multifaceted tale is masterful, this is her gold standard.
Unfortunately, the narrator doesn’t bring the same skill to the end result.
Her voice has a nasal undertone that kind of sits on the edge of hearing, annoyingly detracting from the yarn being spun.
The personality she tried to imbue to the different characters rang flat and false - it’s irritating to have Quincy present as a kind of dotty, timid elderly aunt rather than a seasoned, professional, lifelong spacefaring engineer.
I appreciate that she took the care of giving each character their own inflection, I just wasn’t in agreement with the projections she chose for most of them.
This was the first I purchased in the series (obviously) but before I was finished I checked to see if it was the same narrator for the rest of the series… imagine my disappointment to see that it is.

AMAZING!!!

But. Oh. My. GOD!! The reading was so slow! I was just about to give up when I remembered I could speed up the reading. Then I fell in love. This book is amazing. I can't wait to get into the sequel.
