Publisher's Summary
"If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman/My mother once told me she would have named me Laura/I would grow up to be strong and beautiful like her". (The Ocean)
A searing account of her search for identity and true self, Tranny reveals the struggles and victories that Laura Jane Grace, the lead singer of the cult punk rock band Against Me!, experienced in her quest for gender transition.
Illuminated by Laura Jane's never-before-published journal entries reaching back to childhood, Tranny is an intensely personal and revelatory look inside her struggles with identity and addiction. Grappling with everything from sex, drugs, and failed marriages to the music and soul of a punk rock star, this memoir paints a vivid portrait of one of the most revolutionary transgender icons of our time.

Story
Julia Serano shares her experiences and insights - both pre- and post-transition - to reveal the ways in which fear, suspicion, and dismissiveness toward femininity shape our societal attitudes toward trans women, as well as gender and sexuality as a whole. Serano's well-honed arguments and pioneering advocacy stem from her ability to bridge the gap between the often-disparate biological and social perspectives on gender. In this provocative manifesto, she exposes how deep-rooted the cultural belief is that femininity is frivolous, weak, and passive.

Sellout is both a gripping history of the music industry’s evolution, and a punk rock lover’s guide to the chaotic darlings of the post-grunge era.

Got through this quickly, and with ease.
Loved hearing this narrated by the author. Voice was great to listen to, well spoken, and gave the story that much more intensity. Recommend to anyone that has toured, or been a punk in the late 90s early 2000s. Very relatable and interesting.

Real, raw, captivating
I loved this book. I loved how it flowed from narrative to journal entries. The autobiography is raw, generous in truth, and objectively balanced. I am so happy to meet the real Laura Jane Grace.

Highly recommend
I have been a huge Against Me! fan since I was a teenager, getting to hear the back story to some of my favorite songs made me love them even more. I feel like I felt every emotion during this book. I laughed at times as it reminded me at times of my youth as a young punk. I also found myself in tears several times, feeling the pain of her struggles and also reminding me of friends lost in my life.
Laura is an amazing writer and artist. she is truly a badass chick <3
