About this listen
In Trotsky: Downfall of a Revolutionary, Stanford University lecturer Bertrand M. Patenaude tells the dramatic story of Leon Trotsky's final years in exile in Mexico. Shedding new light on Trotsky's tumultuous friendship with painter Diego Rivera, his affair with Rivera’s wife Frida Kahlo, and his torment as his family and comrades become victims of the Great Terror, Trotsky: Downfall ofa Revolutionary brilliantly illuminates the fateful and dramatic life of one of history's most famous yet elusive figures.

Well worth it, but....
Patenaude should be commended for writing such a fascinating, wide-ranging, and judicious look at Trotsky's last years. There's clearly a very impressive breadth of knowledge behind the writing. Of course, it would be hard to make this story anything but gripping, since it's inherently filled with so much drama and tragedy. Two small caveats: all the American accents sound like imitations of stereotypical mid-westerners, and he pronounces Shachtman as.... Shatman! If you can stomach those two things, you'll really enjoy this book.
