September was really not a great reading month for me, so I decided that the best way to start October was with something I already knew I loved. And honestly, going back to one of my favorite series was exactly what I needed!
Truce is book four in the Neighbor from Hell series, and this definitely wasn't my first time reading it. I originally read it back in December 2014 and have reread it several times since. I even reviewed it years ago, but looking back at that old review… yeah, it was definitely time for an update. 😂
The story actually starts with Jason and Haley celebrating their fifth anniversary when Jason's father decides it's time to tell the story of how the infamous Bradford curse began. And that's when we go all the way back to Robert Bradford and Elizabeth.
Robert and Elizabeth were childhood enemies who haven't seen each other in fourteen years, and when Robert comes back into her life, let's just say the years apart haven't exactly made them behave any better around each other. 😂 Elizabeth is the daughter of an Earl and has spent her life being expected to be perfect, marry well and do exactly what is expected of her. She's counting down the days until an inheritance finally gives her the freedom she's been dreaming about… until Robert comes crashing back into her life.
What follows is enemies-to-lovers, a forced/arranged marriage situation, ridiculous arguments, Bradford-level food obsession, plenty of chaos and, somewhere along the way, these two idiots actually falling in love with each other. ❤️
Since this story takes place in the 1800s, it has a historical romance feel that's very different from the other books in the series, but it still has everything I love about the Bradfords. I giggled, I laughed, I screamed at them, and even though I already knew exactly what was going to happen, I loved revisiting Robert and Elizabeth's story.
And knowing that this is basically where the whole Bradford legacy started makes it even better.
Every single time I pick up a book by R.L. Mathewson, I swear I fall in love with this series all over again. Just when I think one of these books can't possibly make me laugh as much as the previous one, somehow it does. There's a reason I've been coming back to these characters for more than a decade.
This time I listened to the audiobook again and basically finished it in one sitting. Fran Jules did an awesome job with the single narration. Would I absolutely LOVE to see these books eventually get new duet narration editions? YES. Please. My ears would be very happy, and I would buy them the second they were announced. 😂
But until that magical day happens, I'll happily keep listening to the versions I already own.
At this point, R.L. Mathewson doesn't even need to give me a synopsis. I own all the books. I own all the audiobooks that have been released. And if more Bradfords are coming?
Pre-order. Buy. Read. Repeat.
