As someone who was about 15 years old when the Beatles came to prominence in North America, I wondered if I would become bored by this long book. I
After all, we knew the story, right? No we didn’t. The almost week to week chronicle of their personal and professional lives is brilliantly detailed by Mark Lewisohn. These guys worked their tails off and lived rough and tumble lives among hookers, drug dealers, hustlers and other shady characters. You come away admiring their humour, their talent and their dedication to their music and each other. I highly recommend this book; the Beatles are still compelling after all these years.

What an incredible book! At first the length seemed daunting, even listening at 1.5 speed, but it never lagged, and went by rather fast. Apparently it took 10 years to write, so one must be patient waiting for volumes 2 and 3. I’ll definitely buy them. Great coverage of all The Beatles history from childhood up to their first taste of screaming fans. I was particularly interested to hear about the context when their first album came out: The Rolling Stones were just starting up, the Beach Boys were recording, and all three were breaking ground as “groups”, a new phenomenon (until then, the music industry was solo performers, or a “performer and the (band name)”. Interesting for anyone.
