Publisher's Summary

Nic Sheff was drunk for the first time at age 11. In the years that followed, he would regularly smoke pot, do cocaine and ecstasy, and develop addictions to crystal meth and heroin. Even so, he felt like he would always be able to quit and put his life together whenever he needed to. It took a violent relapse one summer in California to convince him otherwise.

In writing that is raw and honest, Nic spares no detail in telling us the compelling, heartbreaking, and true story of his relapse and the road to recovery. As we watch Nic plunge the mental and physical depths of drug addiction, he paints a picture of a person at odds with his past, with his family, with his substances, and with himself.

fascinating

I love it! Deeply honest account of a self inflicted tortured life and the road to redemption.

Memoir

It was an interesting memoir, although It seemed to end rather abruptly.

I was sure as I was listening that it was the author reading it. That means, to me, that the narrator did a great job.

As someone in recovery I always enjoy listening to others experiences, and this one did not disappoint. It wasn’t preachy, as some go. It could be considered triggering I suppose, but I’m at the stage where I want to hear it all. Use your own discretion.

sparing no detail was a solid choice

This really puts you in the mind of someone strung out on meth. And the repetition of words and what not adds to it.

Amazing and beautiful work of art

I am floored by this book, Nicks experience and his way of telling it, completely captures the essence of what it means to struggle with depression, addiction, and family trauma. I’ve watched the Beautiful Boy movie already but holy moly this book completely dove into Nicks life in a way the movie did not, and for that I think it’s worth the listen and I appreciate how raw and honest and genuine he tells his stories.

A wonderful read

I have not ever experienced addiction first hand like this, and the insight that this book provides is profound. As someone who works with people in recovery, I can appreciate hearing what it is like during active use, withdrawal, and recovery.

Gut wrenching

This book is raw and real. It will bring tears to your eyes and pull feelings you didn’t know you could feel out. The first hand telling of life addicted is eye opening to say the least. Nic tells his story with brutal honesty leaving nothing unsaid.
