About this listen
America’s top gymnasts have been show stoppers at the Summer Olympics for decades - the women’s artistic team won nine medals in 2016 alone. But beneath the athleticism, smiles, sponsorship deals, and haul of gold medals was a dark secret: a story of sexual abuse and trauma that, when revealed, became one of the biggest scandals in the history of American sports.
In early 2018, Larry Nassar, the former doctor for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University, was sentenced to serve out the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to a variety of sex crimes. In a show of unparalleled force, more than 150 young women - from gold medalists to former Michigan State University athletes to old family friends - confronted the once beloved Nassar in court, sharing their pain and resolve. Many of them took legal, financial, and career risks to speak out.
But these women’s stories also reveal a stranger, more far-reaching truth: that the institutions responsible for protecting them - from the United States Olympic Committee to local police departments - had known in some form about the abuse for years, and had not put an end to it. Twisted tells the harrowing story of these crimes and how Larry Nassar got away with them for as long as he did.
New York Times best-selling author Mary Pilon and Carla Correa chronicle the scandal from its inception, tracking the institutions that Nassar hid behind, the athletic culture that he benefited from, and the women who eventually brought him to justice. In this Audible Original, you’ll hear directly from these people - including the voices of coaches, parents, industry leaders, and the survivors themselves - as they grapple with the truth about Nassar and describe what it took to bring him down.

Heart breaking
Such a nightmare. Being a gymnast as a child (and a competitive one at that) I can’t say how much I appreciate my coaches who would never have hurt any of us. I can’t imagine what it would have been like for these girls.
Inspiring to see the change they have created within the sport. Unity 🥇

Sad that it took so long
The saddest thing about this book was learning how long this abuser got away with it, how many people failed the girls that spoke up, and just how MANY were abused over the years. The best thing about this book was the courage these girls, many now women, demonstrated when they had him in court. The judge was awesome. More documentary than book, a nice aspect of the book is you hear the actual voices of those impacted. Well done.

Heartbreaking
it will devastate you to know how many complaints were silenced or ignored, swept under the rug, before anyone's experiences were validated and acted upon.

Above-average Audio Presentation
* Note: This is NOT an Audiobook or Podcast.
It's a Documentary incorporating live interviews & court/hearing out-takes.
'Twisted' is a professionally polished recording complete with background emphasis music and TV-standard fades.
This quality exposé is honestly infuriating. The events described in the recording give an inside look into deficiencies in USA Gymnastics and how Larry Nassar (a textbook pedophile - stalking, grooming, rationalizing, etc.) was able to act criminally despite victims doing the Right Thing: *telling* someone.
The sham "investigations", "misplaced" allegations, actual cover-ups, and kangaroo courts are jawdropping. Speaking as a physician myself, Nassar's "legitimate therapy" defense for pelvic floor manipulation is maddening (investigators just trusted him!?!). I need to ask "How did he possibly convince police that massaging little girl breasts was part of hip therapy?"
As to the quality of 'Twisted': This listens like a TV Chronicle posted to YouTube, except that it doesn't include the pauses in interviews where visuals would obviously be inserted.. this one is set up professionally for an audio-only format. The structure is logical (chronological), the evidentiary revelations are exhaustive (nothing is held back), and the interviews move the narrative forward ("flow" is excellent).
Less fortunately, sound quality for the numerous interviews is variable and soundbites from court testimony are occasionally hard to comprehend. The authors do a reasonable job presenting the "book", but Mary Pilon and Carla Correa are also obviously amateur readers (hit & miss diction, occasional stumbling cadence, etc.). I found listening at 1.20X made up for some of the deficiencies - but Audible Originals would have done better employing a professional reader.
Altogether, I am grateful to Audible for including this fascinating look at an "In-Plain-Sight" predator as part of the 'Plus' initiative. The thought-provoking 7.5/10 star product is well-worth a download.

Shocking but needed to be told!
I am so proud of the women and girls who spoke up against this monster but it is so sad how it took so many years to nail this creep! Their stories kept me listening intently from start to finish. I highly recommend it!

Amazing listen
This book was so well done and such an amazing listen. It was often times very difficult to hear what these women and girls went through, but the authors did an wonderful job sharing their stories and their voices.

Shocking
How was this animal able to continue his treachery for so long. Being a survivor of molestation myself who never told because I didn’t think I’d be believed the retribution was satisfying. My hat goes off to all the brave women who came forward.
