About this listen

A moving and powerful introduction to the life and art of renowned artist, Judith Scott, as told by her twin sister, Joyce Scott.

Judith Scott was born with Down syndrome. She was deaf, and never learned to speak. She was also a talented artist. Judith was institutionalized until her sister Joyce reunited with her and enrolled her in an art class. Judith went on to become an artist of renown with her work displayed in museums and galleries around the world.

Poignantly told by Joyce Scott with Brie Spangler, Unbound is inspiring and warm, showing us that we can soar beyond our perceived limitations and accomplish something extraordinary.

I was moved to tears. Beautiful story.

UNBOUND is the remarkable story of twin sisters, Judith and Joyce Scott: In 1943, Judith was born with Down syndrome, and Joyce was born with "normal" intelligence. Narrated by author Joyce Scott, we hear of the bond she shared with her twin: "We sleep like spoons nestled in a drawer." And the terrible sadness she felt when Judith was taken away at age seven and institutionalized. Joyce's longing to be reunited with her sister was finally realized as an adult. In 1985, Joyce became Judith's legal guardian, and got her sister out of the institution. Joyce brought her to California to be with her and her family. There's a lovely scene of them meeting at the airport which brought me to tears. UNBOUND builds on Joyce's 2016 book, "ENTWINED: Sisters and Secrets in the Silent World of Artist Judith Scott". UNBOUND, as an audiobook (and in picture book format) will appeal to children and adults. It really added to my understanding of Judith's art, and the wonderful discovery of her creative talent. Judith and Joyce Scott’s story is life affirming and powerful.
