About this listen
National best seller
Fight cancer, diabetes, heart disease, weight gain, and even the aging process itself with one simple, scientifically proven plan to reverse disease - as well as prevent and reduce symptoms - from the world-renowned pioneer of lifestyle medicine.
Dean Ornish, MD, has directed revolutionary research proving, for the first time, that lifestyle changes can often reverse - undo! - the progression of many of the most common and costly chronic diseases and even begin reversing aging at a cellular level.
Medicare and many insurance companies now cover Dr. Ornish’s lifestyle medicine program for reversing chronic disease because it consistently achieves bigger changes in lifestyle, better clinical outcomes, larger cost savings, and greater adherence than have ever been reported - based on 40 years of research published in the leading peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals.
Now, in this landmark audiobook, he and Anne Ornish present a simple yet powerful new unifying theory explaining why these same lifestyle changes can reverse so many different chronic diseases and how quickly these benefits occur. They describe what it is, why it works, and how you can do it:
- Eat well: a whole foods, plant-based diet naturally low in fat and sugar and high in flavor. The “Ornish diet” has been rated “#1 for Heart Health” by U.S. News & World Report every year from 2011 to 2017.
- Move more: moderate exercise such as walking
- Stress less: including meditation and gentle yoga practices
- Love more: how love and intimacy transform loneliness into healing
With 70 recipes, easy-to-follow meal plans, tips for stocking your kitchen and eating out, recommended exercises, stress-reduction advice, and inspiring patient stories of life-transforming benefits - for example, several people improved so much after only nine weeks that they were able to avoid a heart transplant - Undo It! empowers listeners with new hope and new choices.
“The Ornishes’ work is elegant and simple and deserving of a Nobel Prize, since it can change the world!” (Richard Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States)
“If you want to see what medicine will be like ten years from now, read this book today.” (Rita F. Redberg, MD, editor in chief, JAMA Internal Medicine)
“This is one of the most important books on health ever written.” (John Mackey, CEO, Whole Foods Market)

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease challenges conventional cardiology by posing a compelling, revolutionary idea—that we can, in fact, abolish the heart disease epidemic in this country by changing our diets. Drawing on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a former surgeon, researcher, and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, convincingly argues that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease, but also reverse its effects.

Current medical wisdom advises that anyone suffering from diabetes or prediabetes should eat a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. But in this revolutionary audiobook, Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH, rely on a century of research to show that advice is misguided. While it may improve short-term blood glucose control, such a diet also increases the long-term risk for chronic diseases like cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic kidney disease, and fatty liver disease. The revolutionary solution is to eat a low-fat plant-based whole-food diet.

Holistic Approach to a Healthy Life
The content wasn't as detailed as I expected from the Ornish duo, but it was a nice holistic overview to healthy living (no new information, from my perspective).
The cadence was a little annoying. Anne Ornish spoke so slowly that I had to increase the speed to 1.5x for her to sound normal, then when Dean spoke, 1.25x sounded normal, so the two narrators were out of sync with cadence and I had to either keep switching back and forth, listen to Anne speak painfully slowly, or have Dean speaking a little quickly (I went with Dean speaking a little more quickly). Otherwise, the narrator voices were both good, content was good. It just isn't an epiphany kind of book.

The information is excellent but...
I listened to this a while ago in the car, but I remember there were many parts that did not need to be narrated I thought, such as the detailed workouts and lifestyle changes, which would be better to read in a print version. There is a PDF with the book also, which does help. I skipped many of the detailed descriptive parts. Dr. Ornish and his wife Anne are great narrators though.
