About this listen
In the first thaw of spring the body of a young woman surfaces in the River Torne in the far north of Sweden. Rebecka Martinsson is working as a prosecutor in nearby Kiruna, her sleep troubled by visions of a shadowy, accusing figure. Could the body belong to the girl in her dream? Joining forces with Police Inspector Anna-Maria Mella, Martinsson will need all her courage to face a killer who will kill again to keep the past buried under half a century of silent ice and snow. (Translated from the Swedish by Laurie Thompson.)

The power of empathy
Rebecka Martinsson is a fascinating and compelling character. She seems to be able to reach out from within her own troubled mine to empathize and help others. The plot is complex with many twists and turns but what I will remember most is Rebecka's kindness to the older brother (sorry, i don't know how to spell his name). She perhaps recognizes in him someone who has been oppressed into an isolated and tormented existence. While others see only aggression and evil, Rebecka is able to see past that and into what could be a gentle soul. The other thing I loved about this book is how the dogs are brought to life and how their brief but important lives bring love and gentleness into the lives of those who have suffered cruelty.
