Internationally best-selling author Rick Mofina crafts breathtaking fiction that ratchets up suspense to nerve-jangling levels.

Police officer Karl Styebeck has been called a hero, but his badge takes on an ugly tarnish when he’s linked to the deaths of two women. Driven by personal demons, reporter Jack Gannon lays it all on the line to get to the truth - even if it means rolling the dice with his own life.

I really enjoyed this one. Kept me amused and entertained while working. Didn’t zone out and have go back to listen over again even once. Fun listen.

Rick Mofina is a talented Crime-Thriller author. His stories - often following Investigative Reporters enmeshed in out-of-the-headlines cases - are plotted cleverly (twisty-turny with believable peril for the protagonist) and written with capable vocabulary/prose, description, and character development. This one, unfortunately, didn't quite meet expectations. Don't get me wrong, the book is more than serviceable - if a bit too ludicrous at times. It's just not as good as other Mofina offerings.

Doubtless a distinctly "average" reading from Graham Rowat contributes to my "Meh" assessment of the book, too. His performance is professional mind you, but not particularly noteworthy. In fact, his tenor reading timbre sounds somewhat like a cartoon voice-over. Recorded Books Inc. should have hired a narrator with more gravitas in his voice.

In toto, 'Vengeance Road' is worth a listen - IF you can get it off of the 'Plus' menu. Paying a Credit for this 6/10-star audiobook, however - when better options beckon - would be hard to defend (Mofina's 'Reed and Sydowski' series is fantastic if you're looking for the Canadian author's best, for example).
