Publisher's Summary

Twenty-four-year-old Veronika seems to have everything -- youth and beauty, boyfriends and a loving family, a fulfilling job. But something is missing in her life. So, one cold November morning, she takes a handful of sleeping pills, expecting never to wake up. But she does -- at a mental hospital where she is told that she has only days to live.

Inspired by events in Coelho's own life, Veronika Decides to Die questions the meaning of madness and celebrates individuals who do not fit into patterns society considers normal. Bold and illuminating, it is a dazzling portrait of a young woman at the crossroads of despair and liberation, and a poetic, exuberant appreciation of each day as a renewed opportunity.

Transformative

I love this author. He is masterful in his craft and always delivers life changing wisdom. Each time I read/listen to one of his novels I find a new favorite.

This was a difficult book to listen to because the subject matter is so real and the message is so true.

If you have ever experienced mental health trouble I recommend reading this book as it will help to make sense of what you are struggling with.

A must read for your 20’s

Thank you Paulo for this book. So befitting for this point in my life. My take away is that just isn’t enough mad people in the world. We see the world through a very narrow hole and as such miss the vastness of life. We often get tired of mundane day to day ways of living that have nothing to do with who we are, all because it has been so and so it should be. But really is that it? If we do all that there is, just to be “so called” normal and fit
society, have we really existed beyond a physical form, or merely past time catering to the physical.
And in that is the true illness, the inability to use all we have been given to exist. Seems we are all mad after all. Simply brilliant.

Didn’t like it one bit!

“The alchemist” being his previous work, I expected more from this book. Didn’t get anything out of this except feeling bamboozled that I spent my money on this.
