About this listen
A heart-stopping thriller with so many twists and turns it will leave you breathless.
When Dionne married a nightclub owner, Luke Mason, a whisper in her ear told her she would have it all - the money, the house and the luxury lifestyle. But she never expected her life to turn upside down the day they became parents to twins. After a Mason family member is murdered, a psychiatrist is asked to assist with the investigation. Dr Renee, a research psychiatrist, has spent her life’s work studying the existence of the ‘Gemini Gene’ - a gene believed to exist in a few high-functioning psychopaths. Little does she know that she is not alone in her quest. In the shadows lurks someone who also has a special interest in the gene. Will Dr Renee discover if the Gemini Gene exists, or will it be the voice of reason who has the answers?

Not Great.. but Delicious Dysfunction
If you've ever seen that meme with the kid smirking into the camera with a house burning in the background.. that's the majority of this Kerry Barnes Thriller in a nutshell: little Sociopaths raised in horrible homes reveling in misery and chaos.
To be honest, Barnes takes her main theme of "nature versus nurture" psychopathy to ludicrous levels.. but, despite an overly-contrived "out of nowhere" secret bad guy plot resolution, this book is a fun rollercoaster-ride of ridiculously bad behavior from everyone involved. If you can set aside logic (expect plenty of plot holes); ignore ever-present X-rated language (the number of F-bombs is like nothing I've ever read); and tolerate viscerally repulsive characters (not a single person worthy of redemption exists in the author's reality).. the book is entertaining.
Reader Annie Aldington clearly understands her role in performing the book, too: injecting impressive emotion into cringeworthy over-the-top dialogue. A couple of chosen voices are cartoonish.. but the performance in general is more than "decent" (Aldington's diction, timbre, cadence, and pacing are commendable).
'Voice Of Reason' only merits 5.5 stars out of 10. I can't recommend spending a Credit on it should they ask.. but if you can get it as a 'Plus' selection, it's a reasonable - if silly - distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons.
