Publisher's Summary

This candid memoir of music, fame, and endurance from Deryck Whibley, lead singer of Sum 41, follows his rise from a punk kid to an international star.

From his earliest days growing up in Canada, Deryck Whibley was a punk who loved music and couldn’t wait to achieve something bigger and better than the humble path that lay before him. Whibley was raised by a single mom and their small family constantly moved from place to place, so he was used to being the new kid, starting fights (or finishing them), and connecting with people who shared his sensibility for chaotic fun and loud music. Sum 41 was born of a group of friends who loved to jam, shared a DIY ethos, and were determined to be rock stars one day.

Walking Disaster is Whibley’s story, but it is also the untold story of Sum 41. Whibley takes you backstage, into the recording booth, and through the highest highs and lowest lows of the band whose story is inextricably woven with his own.

With his insightful, earnest, and genuine voice, Whibley gets real about fame, fortune, and the music industry. Detailing everything from winning at the MTV Video Music Awards and being nominated for a Grammy to revisiting his high-profile relationships and friendships, contending with invasive paparazzi, and suffering from health issues that brought him to the brink, Whibley offers a forthright and unforgettable memoir.

Spme crazy revelations

Deryck's intense journey throughout his life. His narration was also very good, and the stripped back songs were a pleasant surprise.

Raw truth and overcoming

It's not a rose coloured look at the life of a punk rock star. Raw and honest about childhood, being groomed by someone in power, losing love, finding true love and surviving what many never do. Great listen.

Couldn’t Stop Listening

I was on the edge of my seat with how much his story caught my attention and loved to learn what was going on behind the scenes of one of my childhood bands.

I did have to slow the reading down to .85 cuz it was a bit fast for me.

I learned so much!

I was obsessed with sum41 from probably 11-17years old! My all time favourite band! This book was so good. It did get sad and the Greg drama really kept going on, but that was reality, so who am I to judge! I wish there was more fun sum 41 stories like on the YouTube channel, but I get that this was more about deryck and his journey.

Incredibly Emotional Journey

Wow, that was one wild ride! Deryck is so down to Earth and relatable, he really has that boy next door charm of a small-town kid who got to live out the rock star fantasy. Growing up in Canada in late 90s and early 2000s I was very familiar with the hits but I had never heard any of the backstory, the drama, the wild times and the extremely dark lows. I was surprised by this book over and over again and developed a great respect for Deryck as an artist and a person. Honestly it was much better than I thought it was going to be and might be my new #1 musician biography!

And I'm so glad that he worked up the courage to publicly expose that creep Greig Nori. That guy is a recurring theme throughout the book and of course that part dominated the headlines, and I'm shocked at how predatory and manipulative the singer of that awful band Treble Charger was/is. I'm just happy it's out there now and the world knows who that guy is. Deryck was really brave for putting it all out there.

Long Live Sum41. Enjoy your retirement, Deryck.

A fantastic listen. A few song breaks which was a nice surprise. So sad to hear of the decade long grooming and SA by GN. I hope there is a way he can be held accountable for his disgustinc actions.
I believe you, Deryck.

A great story

A naturally good story teller with a wild story to tell. If you liked Scar Tissue, The Dirt etc. this is definitely worth reading.
