About this listen
Eighteen years ago, tragedy struck The Refuge cult in northern Minnesota. Forty people committed suicide, and the entire compound burned to the ground. At just 13, Clare was the sole survivor found wandering miles from the encampment, hands blistered, memories of the horrific event wiped from her mind.
Now a sociology professor and liaison to the FBI specializing in cults, Clare has fought to put the past behind her. She has a successful career, a quiet home, and is deeply in love. But intrusive memories and fear of inheriting her cult-leader father’s mental illness threaten to strangle Clare’s budding life when she receives a call from the past. A call informing her a woman has been found claiming to be her sister Shanna - a sister she long thought dead.
Wracked with guilt but determined to prove herself to the sister she thought was lost, Clare returns to her hometown only to be stalked by a threatening stranger and haunted by hallucinations which seem all too real - hallucinations that plagued her father as well. Before long, Clare begins to question what is real as the past overshadows the present and memories return that should’ve stayed forgotten.

Enjoyable Suspense. Suggestion:
Set playback speed at 1.15X
Joe Hart offers a story about the survivor of a Doomsday Cult forced to confront suppressed memories.. or maybe succumb to schizophrenic madness.. or maybe endure supernatural torment. The "what's happening to me?/am I going crazy?" uncertainty in the protagonist is a little heavyhanded, and the spooky events (unexplained noises, fleeting figures, etc.) are underwhelming.. but Hart has a good grasp of "creepy" - and builds tension nicely. Unfortunately, he didn't captivate me with the mystery and couldn't quite convince me to be frightened. Expect neither great plotting nor chills if you download this Suspense-Thriller with horror-tinged imagery.
Likewise unfortunate: The narration from Patricia Santomasso betrays overenunciation, subpar voice-acting, and periods of a melodramatic whispery timbre that sounded like someone trying to tell a scary campfire story in a scary way. Her errors aren't overwhelming, mind you.. I'm just saying that they're corrected somewhat by listening at a higher rate. Santomasso was an "adequate" casting choice by Tantor Audio Inc. overall.
Altogether, 'We Sang In The Dark' was an atmospheric listen meriting 6/10-stars. If you can get it off of the 'Plus' menu, it's worth your time.. but spend your Credit elsewhere if Audible asks you for one.
