About this listen

Get Out meets Parasite in this eerily haunting debut and Reddit hit—soon to be a Netflix original movie starring Blake Lively—about two homeowners whose lives are turned upside down when the house’s previous residents unexpectedly visit.

As a young, queer couple who flip houses, Charlie and Eve can’t believe the killer deal they’ve just gotten on an old house in a picturesque neighborhood. As they’re working in the house one day, there’s a knock on the door. A man stands there with his family, claiming to have lived there years before and asking if it would be alright if he showed his kids around. People pleaser to a fault, Eve lets them in.

As soon as the strangers enter their home, uncanny and inexplicable things start happening, including the family’s youngest child going missing and a ghostly presence materializing in the basement. Even more weird, the family can’t seem to take the hint that their visit should be over. And when Charlie suddenly vanishes, Eve slowly loses her grip on reality. Something is terribly wrong with the house and with the visiting family—or is Eve just imagining things?

Very spooky excellent story

couldn't put this book down ( figuratively it's audible ) every chapter had me wanting more! The excerpts of increasingly supernatural chapter ends really amped up the horror.

Started off strong but a lot of loose ends

Overall I really enjoyed listening to this book- the narrator does an unbelievable job at embodying the tense, creepy and unsettling tone of this book throughout. She convincingly portrays the main character and her enactment really carries the story throughout. The book itself started off so strong and captivating until the very end which was a disappointment for me . I wish there was just a bit more clarity at the end and more loose ends tied up. I had soo many unanswered questions but it did leave you thinking and wondering if maybe there would be a part two of this book to continue the story and address a lot of the loose ends . Overall tho it was an enjoyable listen !

Story felt lacking, but wonderful eerie narration

This felt more like a very long campfire spooky story for teens than an actual scary story for adults. Totally fun if you're a young adult and just want to spend time in a world of spookiness! Very spooky indeed! But... as a story, it sort of goes nowhere... I would have given up if I weren't so determined for it to get better. I wanted it to go somewhere!

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did because it did have compelling aspects. But it's more like a mishmash of haunted ideas/images/stories we've heard of before. It felt more like a haunted experience without explanation, kind of like when we physically walk through a haunted house on Halloween, where there isn't really an explanation or a culmination, but you went through the adventure, it was spooky and fun to experience, and you come out on the other side glad that's not your life. But that's about it...

It made me think it would be fun to read chapters to teens on a family trip where we wanted a spooky haunted story together. Or a good book to listen to around Halloween time just for novelty!

But not for an adult who wants an actual story. I also kept thinking the main character made really dumb decisions at key moments, which made it repeatedly lose credibility for me.

Super job on the narration though! That kept me going!

I actually hope someone else absolutely loves this books and proves my review wrong!

Loved it!

This could be AHS episode, very similar dynamic and vibe, I was about to drop it thinking it’s just another “haunted house” but it’s more than that - it’s pretty cool - recommended 🫶

Thrilling Listen

Edit: I updated my score to 5/5 after rereading. I did some research and there will be a second book. On second read through, I realized sooo many plot points and twists that I missed during the first listen after I had the understanding of what was going on. This book is way more in depth than it lets on. There are so many subtle clues that you just took as normal/odd (but I took them as loose ends). It literally starts right from the second she meets Thomas! Wooow I am so shook bc I missed so much! This is a masterpiece and I bought the book so I could decipher all of the clues and codes. Nothing is as it seems and I hope the second book explains everything. There’s a reddit group created to figure out the clues, there is an actual website for the toy company in the book people are emailing to try and solve the mystery so it’s a real life mystery too 🤭Anyways, please read this and open your mind and think critically.

I agree with many of the other reviewers about the loose ends, but I heard it may be getting a second book.

There were a few times Eve made some questionable decisions, but many of her choices are pressured by her anxiety and fear of being paranoid. Where I may have made a different decision, she was constantly questioning her sanity which led her to doubt what she was truly seeing.

I would love to give it 5/5 but bc of loose unexplained end, I cannot until a sequel is confirmed. I usually don’t mind open ended novels that leave you thinking, but this is kind of beyond that and actually leave many questions unanswered. More like a cliff hanger.

I don’t regret listening to this story at all and it was so good! Please give it a try if you’re looking for another great listen!

Very good book

Finally a great audiobook that I don’t regret downloading! Captivating story, wouldn’t call it necessarily a horror, but good suspense/ psychological thriller.

The story was well read and well written.
You don't knownehats going to happen - there are multiple versions of what may happen or why or how. It's a great read. Recommended

Great debut Novel

This was a great first novel can't wait to see what else he will write.

Would love to see a follow up to this book.

The narrator had a nice voice to listen too for all the different characters.

Happy Listening Everyone
