About this listen

'Crime fiction at its best.' Keri Beevis

Why does someone want the Lawrence family dead?

The Lawrences were the perfect family: successful, beautiful and happy, until one night their whole world was ripped apart.

Detective Sergeant Jenna Morgan is called to investigate the suspected arson attack and death of the Lawrence family at the charred remains of their stunning home, Kimble Hall.

The case takes a sinister turn as the body count fails to tally.

Suspecting that someone may have survived the inferno, DS Morgan and her team need to discover whether they are looking for a witness, or someone far more dangerous.

Who set the fire? Who wanted this family extinguished beyond recognition?

As the case progresses, DS Morgan realises she has a calculating, cold-blooded killer on her hands, and the race is on to track them down before they kill again...

A gripping psychological crime novel from bestselling author Diane Saxon, perfect for fans of Cara Hunter.

Enough about the dogs

Great beginning but made a short story long with the endless references to dogs. I didn’t finish it…

Great story line

This book was excellent. It was as good as the first book. I like the twist and turns and the great plot.

Interesting procedural novel

Enjoyed the novel . It is clearly a novel outlining the processes police follow in day today world. It takes a little away from the story but still is good. I enjoyed the dog parts especially as I personally love animals. Not my favourite narrator but ok.

So So story Plot

Starts with a good story plot, but gets bungled along the way. Way too much repetition of story line! Also lots of boring, unnecessary details about food info etc. which drags on and should have been left out of story.

Begs for an Editor

Diane Saxon could be elevated to the fraternity of "excellent" British Mystery-Thriller authors (rather than merely a "passable" one) if she could just set aside her obsessions & get a grasp on pacing..
Her plots are engrossing (a more-than-it-seems Family Annihilator leaving one survivor in this one..), her investigators are professional, dedicated, intuitive, and realistic.. and her setting is out-of-the-headlines relatable (readers/listeners could easily picture themselves at the scene of the crime).
Unfortunately - besides the crime getting a little bit 'Scooby-doo' sophomoric - fully ⅓ of the details & dialogue in this book are extraneous.. not just unnecessary but actually interfering with flow. Additionally, some scenes are dragged out interminably - 10 pages of waiting for the paramedics is waaaay too long. An aggressive Editor could probably turn this from an admittedly enjoyable book into a best-seller.

Please Note: my impression of the book is doubtless influenced by the superior reading from Katy Sobey.
Her exemplary diction, timbre, cadence, and tone improved my enjoyment of the book markedly. Best of all, however, Sobey's characters are performed so well that they are instantly distinguishable and easy to picture with the mind's-eye. I will definitely look out for more from this voice-actor.

Taken altogether, despite the excellent quality standards, this third audiobook in the 'DS Morgan' series rates 5 stars out of 10 (it's the weakest installment).
Still, I feel genuinely fortunate that I was able to get the book as part of the 'Plus' initiative. There is definitely room for improvement.. but if they asked for money, Saxon's work would still rate a listen for any fan of the Crime-Thriller genre who is willing to ignore her nonsensical obsession with dogs and give "decent" - if amateurish - writing a chance.

The story was good but dragged down a bit with so many unnecessary descriptions I found

Book 3 another great book 1

So far this is my 3rd book listen. really loved 😍 it. All 3 are narrated well. Easy listening and could not turn off from the start to the finish. This book was not as twisty as the other 2, never the less it was just as good. I contribute this to the narrative and well developed characters, I am on to book 4 and anticipate another great listen!!

A good listen

Not a deep story - nor that surprising. Not any twists and turns but the performance was about as good as it could be given the writing. Not a bad story, just not great.

Good read

Good story, good pace. Not a fan of repetative words or phrases. At times the story drags with too much description.
