Publisher's Summary

From USA Today best-selling author, Marley Valentine comes a brand new, marriage in crisis, hurt/comfort, standalone, gay romance.

If someone asked me to describe our love story, I would only need to use two words.

Before and After.

When I met Leonardo Ricci, he was determined I would only be a fling, while I was certain he was my forever.

Seven years later, we’re the perfect couple. Happy, married, and in love–in sickness and health, till death do us part.

At least until the unthinkable happens.

Now we can’t look at each other. We don’t sleep in the same bed. We can’t even be in the same room. The loss is too great and the pain runs too deep.

But this man is the love of my life. I convinced him once, and I would be damned if I couldn’t do it again. I would be damned if I couldn’t fix what we broke.

Sometimes love hurts

After a tragedy, Leo can’t seem to come back to himself and is pushing away everyone who loves him, especially his husband. This is a story of grief, but also about how the good ones stick. Jesse is the husband we all deserve. A man who will fight for you and your love, even when you’ve lost all hope.

Very emotional

I downloaded this book to listen to while I was having a bad day. I heard the trigger warnings and thought I would be good. I have listened to this book twice now and cried both times.

It is a very good author that has the ability to use the exact right word to elicit an emotional response from the reader. Marley is that author for me.

I cried, felt frustrated, laughed, cried again, and cheered these characters on. This is a difficult story to hear with so many serious mental health issues being tackled at once but life never seems to only throw things at us one at a time, and therefore this story has a sense of realism to it.

Joe and Teddy are amazing, putting the right amount of emotional into every word. Such great voices to listen too.

Heartwrenching but wonderful

Trigger warning: on page stillbirth, alcoholism, DUI, self destruction

Leo: grew up with llcoholic parents and had a habit of keeping everyone distant til he met Jesse.

Jesse: had a 10 year old daughter when they met. He and his still best friend got pregnant in high school after a one night stand before they figured out they were both gay.

Leo and Jesse were the perfect couple for 7 years and I really enjoyed those before chapters. Then they asked the best friend to have another baby for them and everything changed. Those chapters were heartbreaking and really hard to get through. I almost considered quiting this book a few times. The back and forth past and present helped balance the good and the bad. I'm glad I made it til the end as it was totally worth it.

Well that hurt

If you don’t want to read a book that hurts from page 1 to the bitter end this is absolutely not for you. If you have ever experienced pregnancy loss or loss of a child (I have) this. Will. Hit. Hard. IMO, based on what I know I can handle of course, it was worth every tear and I will be listening to this one again.
Joe Arden, listening to you narrate utter emotional agony will never not hurt. You are exceptional at your craft.
Teddy Hamilton is another fave narrator of mine and I loved his work in a role so much more painful than I’ve heard from him in the past.
