About this listen
This book could save your life: Protect yourself from violence and learn survival skills for dangerous situations with this essential guide from a former military intelligence officer.
In a civilized society, violence is rarely the answer. But when it is - it's the only answer.
The sound of breaking glass downstairs in the middle of the night.
The words "move and you die".
The hands on your child, or the knife to your throat.
In this essential new book, self-protection expert and former military intelligence officer Tim Larkin changes the way we think about violence in order to save our lives. By deconstructing our assumptions about violence - its morality, its function in modern society, how it actually works - Larkin unlocks the shackles of our own taboos and arms us with what we need to know to prevent, prepare for, and survive the unthinkable event of life-or-death violence. Through a series of harrowing true-life stories, Larkin demonstrates that violence is a tool equally effective in the hands of the "bad guy" or the "good guy"; that the person who acts first, fastest, and with the full force of their body is the one who survives; and that each and every one of us is capable of being that person when our lives are at stake.
An indispensable resource, When Violence Is the Answer will remain with you long after you've finished listening, as the bedrock of your self-protection skills and knowledge.

Story
The revised and updated edition of Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's modern classic about the psychology of combat, hailed by the Washington Post as "an illuminating account of how soldiers learn to kill and how they live with the experiences of having killed". In World War II, only 15 to 20 percent of combat infantry were willing to fire their rifles. In Korea, about 50 percent. In Vietnam, the figure rose to more than 90 percent. The good news is that most soldiers are loath to kill.

The title of this audiobook, Can I See Your Hands, refers to one of the key outcomes of this audiobook - being able to tell whether or not people want to cause us harm. To put it very simply, if you can see someone's hands and they are not concealing them, holding a weapon or positioning to strike you, one's levels of trust and confidence can increase. This simple example can serve as a reminder to all of us in many of the complex moments we have to deal with, and difficult decisions we have to make, in everyday life.

Story
In his groundbreaking best seller The Gift of Fear, Gavin de Becker showed millions of readers that, like every creature on earth, human beings can predict violent behavior. Now, in this exclusive audio presentation of Protecting the Gift, de Becker empowers parents to fully trust their own intuition when it comes to their children's safety. In this indispensable resource, de Becker provides keen insights into the behavior and strategies of predators. He offers practical new steps to enhance children's safety at every age level: specific questions parents can ask to effectively screen and evaluate babysitters, daycare services, schools, and doctors; a "Test of 12" safety skills children need before being alone in public; warning signs to help parents protect children from sexual abuse; and how to keep teenage girls and boys from unsafe situations with peers and adults. De Becker also shatters the myth that rules like "Never talk to strangers" will keep your children safe. By showing what danger really looks like - as opposed to what we might imagine it looks like - de Becker gives parents freedom from many common worries and unwarranted fears.

Fantastic!
The main message of the book is undeniably honest, no matter how uncomfortable it can make a person feel. We live in a world with a lot of bad people. Accept the mindset that Tim Larkin presents because it is necessary in the process of assessing the situation so you can act quickly to protect yourself and your family. Thanks Tim!

people often forgot how dark the world really is, we don't live in a fantasy land like a lot of people seem to be. "the world we live in, not the world we want."

Excellent, and may save a life
This was a fantastic book and guide. It opened my eyes to many aspects of self defense that are rarely covered in an average class. It would have been helpful to have a PDF with diagrams to go with the later chapters on leverage, etc.. Aside from that, this was a GREAT purchase.

Confused
A glut of confusing info with stats that have no applications in street level combat. Why is it that we make these SOF operators as demigods ? with a gun or explosives okay listen but H2H not so much.

Ok
The first 3/4 of the book is pretty good. Great mindsets for survival. Goes into some unrealistic self defense ideas near the end.
