About this listen

"Narrators Imani Jade Powers and Steve West team up to deliver an emotionally engrossing performance of this YA fantasy...[They] hook listeners from the first page." (AudioFile Magazine)

In a city covered in ice and ruin, a group of magicians face off in a daring game of magical feats to find the next headliner of the Conquering Circus, only to find themselves under the threat of an unseen danger striking behind the scenes.

As each act becomes more and more risky and the number of missing magicians piles up, three are forced to reckon with their secrets before the darkness comes for them next.

The Star: Kallia, a powerful showgirl out to prove she’s the best no matter the cost

The Master: Jack, the enigmatic keeper of the club, and more than one lie told

The Magician: Demarco, the brooding judge with a dark past he can no longer hide

Where Dreams Descend is the startling and romantic first audiobook in Janella Angeles’ debut Kingdom of Cards fantasy duology, where magic is both celebrated and feared and no heart is left unscathed.

It's okay...

First of all, the narration was pretty good. I do think it would have been good to have a 3rd voice actor for the male lead or had something that mentions the switch in POV, because it was a little hard to follow when it was suddenly from his perspective, but the voice acting was well done.
The story was... okay I guess. I find it hard to come back to, as in if I took a break from listening, I didn't care so much about coming back and almost felt forced to finish it. I find the MC to be a little too much of a "strong female lead" to the point that she's rude and arrogant, so I couldn't relate to her and don't care for her much. The magic was interesting and I liked the importance given to mirrors. The best character was her best friend, and I would have liked more of their platonic relationship. I do like her and Demarco's pasts catching up with them, though Jack's behavior is almost romanticized but he's manipulative and I don't like him. Overall, I feel like the world building and story had a lot of potential, but it was delivered in a meh way with a very unlikable MC
