About this listen

Raised in a South Boston housing project, James "Whitey" Bulger became the most wanted fugitive of his generation. In this riveting story, rich with family ties and intrigue, award-winning Boston Globe reporters Kevin Cullen and Shelley Murphy follow Whitey’s extraordinary criminal career - from teenage thievery to bank robberies to the building of his underworld empire and a string of brutal murders.

It was after a nine-year stint in Alcatraz and other prisons that Whitey reunited with his brother William "Billy" Bulger, who was soon to become one of Massachusetts’s most powerful politicians. He also became reacquainted with John Connolly, who had grown up around the corner from the Bulgers and was now - with Billy’s help - a rising star at the FBI. Once Whitey emerged triumphant from the bloody Boston gang wars, Connolly recruited him as an informant against the Mafia. Their clandestine relationship made Whitey untouchable; the FBI overlooked gambling, drugs, and even homicide to protect their source. Among the close-knit Irish community in South Boston, nothing was more important than honor and loyalty, and nothing was worse than being a rat. Whitey is charged with the deaths of 19 people killed over turf, for business, and even for being informants; yet to this day he denies he ever gave up his friends or landed anyone in jail.

Fascinating Criminal

This may be the most complete Biography/True Crime narrative that I have ever encountered. Boston Globe reporters Kevin Cullen and Shelley Murphy lead readers/listeners through an engrossing exposé on a criminal that sat near the top of the FBI's '10 Most Wanted' list for 16 years.. an organized crime kingpin who murdered 19 people - while the FBI *wink-wink*'d and looked the other way in exchange for (often dubious) anti-Mafia informant tidbits. From childhood through bank-robbing & a stint in Alcatraz through gun-running for the IRA through to his fugitive years, Cullen/Murphy provide every conceivable detail in their subject's jaw-dropping life.
True, there is quite a lot of artistic license taken - implying questionable authenticity at times - but the authors also sometimes explicitly say where they couldn't confirm allegations.. and script Bulger's murders so cinematically that readers can picture them in their mind's eye.

Similar to the authorship, my concerns with the performance are minor: Reader James Colby reads slightly too slowly (setting playback speed at 1.15X is required to correct the unnatural rate).
Other than that, his narration is unimpeachable (his Massachusetts accents are impressive, for example).

Altogether, 'Whitey Bulger' is a 9.5/10-star audiobook. Yes, it's long, but goes by incredibly quickly (I was sorry that it was over when it ended). Even when it leaves the 'Plus' menu, this recording is worth your Credit.

ATTN PRODUCERS: This book BADLY needs an 'Afterword' discussing Bulger's violent murder while in prison after conviction
