About this listen

The Wheel of Time is now an original series on Prime Video, starring Rosamund Pike as Moiraine!

In Winter's Heart, the ninth novel in Robert Jordan’s #1 New York Times bestselling epic fantasy series, The Wheel of Time®, Rand al'Thor and his friends face personal trials in their quests to build alliances against the Dark One.

After locating Masema Dagar, the Prophet of the Dragon, on Rand’s behalf, Perrin Aybara returns to his encampment to discover his wife Faile has been abducted by the Shaido Aiel. Determined to reclaim her, Perrin forgoes his mission, risking his army in pursuit of a dangerous and unpredictable enemy.

Wounded and trapped in the Seanchan-occupied city of Ebou Dar, Mat Cauthon is awaiting an opportunity to leave. But he is not the only one in hiding. Three Aes Sedai are desperate to escape. As Mat seeks a way to smuggle them all out of the city, he encounters his own prophesized fate when he meets the Daughter of the Nine Moons.

Rand himself is on a mission of vengeance. He has tracked the traitorous Asha’man who tried to kill him to Far Madding. It is a city where no one is capable of channeling the One Power, leaving Rand vulnerable to those who would stop at nothing to destroy the Dragon Reborn…

Since its debut in 1990, The Wheel of Time® by Robert Jordan has captivated millions of readers around the globe with its scope, originality, and compelling characters. The last six books in series were all instant #1 New York Times bestsellers, and The Eye of the World was named one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read.

Featured Article: The Best Female Narrators You Can Listen To All Day

When considering a new audiobook, one of the biggest questions listeners have is whether they’ll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable as audiobooks span at least a few hours, and sticking with one person’s voice for that period can feel like a big commitment. Luckily, there are so many excellent voice actors performing audiobooks that you might just find yourself gravitating to certain audiobooks based solely on the narrator’s strength.

Best book since B3 imo.

Maybe there wasn't a ton that moved the story forwards, but SOOOO many little changes and intrigues with each character. This really got me excited for the home stretch!

Another Entry In The 'Forgettable' Subset Of Books

Wheel Of Time story structure:
•Books 1-3: Worldbuild (Awesome)
•Books 4-6: Learn How To Use The Power (Excellent)
•Books 7-11: Shuffle Alliances & Enemies* (Meh)
•Books 12-14 - Sanderson: You'll see (it gets Awesome again)

Don't get me wrong.. I don't think that Robert Jordan planned this story matrix a priori - the distinctions between groups of novels just turned out that way.. and these "world enriching" books are *absolutely* worth reading:
Books 7-11 add much-appreciated color to the author's peerless imaginings; consolidate the personalities of incredibly fascinating characters (Rand, Mat, Perrin, Nynaeve, Egwene, Elayne, et al); reiterate the "recurrent history/prophecy" theme of the entire WoT series; and put readers directly into Jordan's world (making it incredibly easy to immerse themselves into the illusion of reality).

It's just that nothing NEW happens. No important characters make a first appearance in these books. No unfamiliar settings are explored. No new aspects of the magic system are developed. In fact, No truly consequential story elements are introduced at all.
Instead, characters deal with inner conflicts.. while factions within groups (like Aes Sedai, Aiel, Seanchan, White Cloaks, Sea Folk, Asha'man, Two-Rivers Folk, etc.) struggle/battle/maneuver/scheme for predominance. You could conceivably skip any or all of these installments without missing anything important.

What you *will* miss, however, is some outstanding narration. Kate Reading and Michael Kramer continue the excellent performance that characterizes their work on the entire series.. but are particularly impressive in this episode. They read the book and characters with unsurpassed quality: both of them exhibiting spot-on diction, timbre, cadence, and pacing - but also an unmatched interested tone and voice-acting that portrays Jordan's characters *perfectly* and makes it easy to instantly recognize who is speaking to who.

Altogether, fans of WoT should invest the Credit in 'Winter's Heart'.. it merits a respectable 7.5 stars out of 10 and introduces a number of - at the very least - "interesting" story threads among our heroes.
If, however, you aren't all that invested in the series or decide you don't have the time or money, you can feel free to skip it.

[Incidentally: The way that Jordan writes the Seanchan is sheer genius: truly detestable traditions discussed as matter-of-fact "well of course we torture our slaves and keep women in kennels" cultural "realities" inspires readers/listeners to *despise* the entire race]

The Wheel of time saga

#Audible 1 This series is arguably the modern Lord of the Rings. Rich, detailed and filled with a unique take on old themes and words, the Wheel of time is a Must Read for those who call themselves fans of High Fantasy Genre books.

Great continuation...

This is the kind of book where I am certain the author is paid per word, instead of by action and plot. It was tedious to get through, but necessary to the storyline. I have heard the next book(s) are better.

Love it

As with all the books in this series I was not disappointed. Some reviews call it a pointless filler but I think it was important part of the story especially with so many different characters. Getting to know them and their world has been really incredible.

This book was good alot happened with a lot of characters. I'm reading these books for the frist time I hope when I finally finish the series I'll understand why Robert Jordan made books 8,9 and 10 the way they are written.
