About this listen

She's been in a coma for years. How can she be pregnant?

When a coma patient starts to have contractions and gives birth to a baby boy, the child's arrival triggers an investigation into serious sexual assault.

Detectives McQuillan and Blalock are handed the case, while the internal hospital team collects data to help with the investigation.

When Dr. Angela Crawford, who helped deliver the baby, learns that the child will be put in foster care, she and her husband agree to take the little boy in.

Meanwhile, a young nurse, Jenny O'Hearn, helps compile data on the rapist and discovers several strange things. When Jenny is attacked, it forces the detectives to look at the case from a different perspective.

Could a staff doctor, male nurse, or the chaplain be the rapist?

Sometimes the truth isn't always obvious.

Fascinating Premise.. Amateurish Execution

The crime in this story is straight out of the headlines: a comatose resident of a long-term care facility is raped & impregnated. A physician working at the facility, various nurses, a reporter, and police investigators all try their hand at solving the case - and the combinaton of interviews, intuition, and DNA searches unveils an extensive list of plausible suspects. McGarvey Black does a nice job developing a capable mystery with some truly clever twists.
Unfortunately, her plot progression, dialogue, and character development efforts are clumsy & hamfisted. This book feels like the result of a creative writing assignment from a night school somewhere.

Lauren Ezzo's distinctly below average narration on this project contributes to my unfavorable impression of 'Without Her Consent', too. She reads far too slowly, often exhibits a mechanical cadence, and consistently overenunciates. Ezzo furthermore has a ridiculously limited character voice repertoire and demonstrates straight-up groanworthy accent attempts.

This audiobook rates 3 stars out of 10 at best. Even as a 'Plus' selection, it's a questionable download.. but if they ask for a Credit, you're crazy to spend it on this one.

Meh

Just ok. Nothing great. Only reason I read it was it was free. Or I would have returned it.

Horrible

Although the story line was good, the author’s overuse of the word “said” made it seem like a grade 6 student wrote it. Perhaps they missed the unit where the teacher covered “Said is Dead”.
The narrator was awful, often forgetting to use the fitting accent for the character. She also used paused after a character’s comment, which made hearing the dialogue uncomfortable and incredibly annoying. I won’t be able to get. Said Blade. Said McCue. Out of my head for a long time.
It’s unfortunate as another author and narrator would have made this story a great one.

Great Psychological Drama

Original plot, strong characters and bizarre, but fitting (?!), ending. Great narrator!

Great book

The narrator wasn’t very good, but I liked the book. It keeps you wanting to know more.
