About this listen

Kelvin Wiltshire lives the life of a simple cook in a remote village on the far side of Trendham.

The townsfolk think little of the man and his son and believe him to be just another refugee from the Terabinian war. On cold winter nights, they share rumors of the bloody conflict and the mysterious death of Will Cartwright, the mighty mage who had the power to command storms.

They like the new cook. They fear the fallen king. But the two men are one and the same.

Haunted by nightmares from his past, Will has chosen a life of exile, hoping to erase the blood from his soul by forging a simple life. Service and family might ease his pain, but beneath his scars are deeper wounds: a queen and wife turned into a lich, friends poisoned with hate. While he seeks peace in isolation, his absence has left a void, and an ancient foe craves a return to power.

Patient and malevolent, the enemy knows the nature of man, and anger is an oh-so-useful tool in the game of nations. As war looms, Will’s anonymity—and the life he’s built—are threatened, forcing him to choose between the friends of his past and the friends of his present. To win, he’ll need what he left behind: the mantle of the Stormking.

What the critics say

"In a realm meticulously populated with trolls, elves, dragons, and mages, Reynolds is at his best giving lively voices to nosy aunts, curious cousins, and a brother-in-law with a heart of gold." —AudioFile Magazine

Final battle was disappointing

I have really enjoyed this writer, so yah make sure to go back and read them all, but I would have liked to hear more about the bad guys and their perspective. That said, I see the hints of that topic being covered in the next book in the series, so I will withhold my judgement for now. Loved watching Oli grow up :)

Really enjoyed this

If you aren’t happy with the way the last book turned out this will defiantly make up for it. I can’t wait for the next book

One of the best fantasy series of all time

I couldn't get enough of this book, found it hard to put down. I can't wait for another chapter in this amazing series.

A Return To Form

As others have said, this book is a massive improvement over the Wizard's Crown. I didn't dislike the book as much as it seems everyone else did but I was very unhappy with the ending. This book doesn't undo it but throughout its duration it does a lot to repair the damage left. The pacing is a little slow, but the character work is fantastic, the world building is as good as ever, and there's a satisfying conclusion that leaves you looking forward to the next book. Welcome back, Michael G. Manning.

Back to form

The continuation of Wills story was a good recovery from the “character assassination” that was the “Wizards Crown”. Looking forward to the next in this series.

Not a bad Story

I found it had a reasonable amount of non pg content which was fantastic. It removes the highschool feel from typical sci-fi stories. It did drag sometimes. but it not too bad. I recommend it as it appeals to all of the LGBTQ 2 persons.

Yay!

Didn't expect Will's story to continue. This book was so much better than the last in the previous series.

A Great Comeback!

While I enjoyed Wizard's Crown, I can see where many of the complaints came from. This book contextualizes many of the events and continues on with the quality I was expecting after Boof 4 of Art of the Adept. Very enjoyable, very entertaining, and I very much away the next in series.
