About this listen

Mary Shields is a moody, acerbic probation officer, dealing with some of Glasgow’s worst cases and her job is on the line. Liam Macdowall was imprisoned for murdering his wife, and he’s published a series of letters to the dead woman, in a book that makes him an unlikely hero – and a poster boy for men’s rights activists. Liam is released on licence into Mary’s care, but things are far from simple. Mary develops a poisonous obsession with Liam and his world, and when her son and Liam’s daughter form a relationship, Mary will stop at nothing to impose her own brand of justice … with devastating consequences. A heart-pounding, relentless and chilling psychological thriller, rich with deliciously dark and unapologetic humour, Worst Case Scenario is also a perceptive, tragic and hugely relevant book by one of the most exciting names in crime fiction.©2019 Helen FitzGerald (P)2019 Bolinda Publishing Crime Thrillers Fiction Genre Fiction International Mystery & Crime Literary Fiction Literature & Fiction Noir Police Procedural Political Psychological Thriller Espionage Mystery Exciting Heartfelt Suspense Comedy

Not a mystery or crime thriller

I was very disappointed that this story was not a mystery or crime thriller as advertised. It's basically a character study of a woman who makes a series of increasingly bad decisions, maybe or maybe not due to menopause. She's actually quite an entertaining character which does contribute to the story, to a point. She does make a few decisions which are ridiculously terrible and somewhat unbelievable. I was torn between admiring her for being ballsy and brazen, and disliking her for being kind of dumb sometimes and not thinking things through, digging herself deeper and deeper into a hole she is obviously never going to get out of. I was entertained for the most part throughout the story and I did finish the book but was expecting more of a "tartan noir" than a "what not to do as a social worker and a mother" lesson.
