Publisher's Summary

Following the breakout success of her critically acclaimed and award-winning novel Euphoria, Lily King returns with an unforgettable portrait of an artist as a young woman.

Blindsided by her mother’s sudden death and wrecked by a recent love affair, Casey Peabody has arrived in Massachusetts in the summer of 1997 without a plan. Her mail consists of wedding invitations and final notices from debt collectors. A former child golf prodigy, she now waits tables in Harvard Square and rents a tiny, moldy room at the side of a garage where she works on the novel she has been writing for six years. At 31, Casey is still clutching onto something nearly all her old friends have let go of: the determination to live a creative life. When she falls for two very different men at the same time, her world fractures even more. Casey’s fight to fulfill her creative ambitions and balance the conflicting demands of art and life is challenged in ways that push her to the brink.

Writers & Lovers follows Casey - a smart and achingly vulnerable protagonist - in the last days of a long youth, a time when every element of her life comes to a crisis. Written with King’s trademark humor, heart, and intelligence, Writers & Lovers is a transfixing novel that explores the terrifying and exhilarating leap between the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another.

My search was satisfied

For months I have been scanning countless novels in search of a contemporary female writer just entering the arena of competitive fiction. And voila! This sophisticated, banana seat bike rider emerges through the morning mist feeling joy. I have only one comment: did your parents give you such an exquisite brain but misspelled your first name? Mine did too. Try Lili Cecila. Seriously, you have written a superb novel!

Perfect book, perfect time

This was my first Lily King and I didn’t even remember why it was on my To Be Read list. I started it with no sense of what it was about, no expectations. I loved it! The character development is fantastic, and believable, and this drives the story. Normally I need plot too, and there was enough plot but it was everyday stuff. The characters, the protagonist in particular, kept me wanting more. Plus it was so bookish, which is always great as a book lover.

A beautiful, subtle read

Easy to read yet substantial. Prose is beautiful. The narrator embodies the character. It’s one of those books that leans on the everyday common experience rather than momentous events or plot twists. I really enjoyed it and would like to read more by this author.

Not very empowering. Not very good.

Middle class white girl struggles with middle class problems until everything sorts itself out with minimal effort or growth from our protagonist. All characters, including the protagonist, are one dimensional. Some cute 90s moments and a decent light read but don’t expect anything profound. After seeing other glowing reviews I’m left wondering if this is an emperors new clothes situation or if I vastly misunderstood this text.
