About this listen

The first two limbs of the eight-fold path of yoga sutras - the basic text for classical yoga - are examined in this spiritual guide to the practice of yoga. Foundational to all yogic thought, they are considered to be the guidelines to the yoga way of living that free individuals to take ownership of their lives, direct them toward the fulfillment they seek, and gain the skills to choose attitude, thought, and action.

The first five guidelines are referred to as the yamas - a Sanskrit word that translates to "restraints" - and encompass nonviolence, truthfulness, not stealing, nonexcess, and nonpossessiveness. The last five are referred to as the niyamas, or observances - purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender.

A wonderful unpacking of the yamas and niyamas

I enjoyed the whimsical storytelling and ethical understanding of the two first limbs of yoga.

One of my favourites. I listen to a ton like this.

Now my 4th time listening to this and it gets better every time. Just the truth presented in an easy way to absorb and act on for a better life.

Author is clueless on the most basic principles of yogic philosophy.

The majority of the book waffles on about peace, compassion and non violence and yet the author talks about consuming animal products on multiple occasions. She also tries to glorify and romanticize animal use (abuse) from elephants to horses. Never take advice from someone regarding compassion who is involved by choice in the use and abuse of animals. Nobody doing yoga looking for peace and stillness will ever find it whilst being complicit in violence towards the most vulnerable. Peace begins on your dinner plate.
