What if your worst enemy discovered your darkest secret?

At 2:00 a.m. on the morning of her 40th birthday, Sophie wakes in the darkness of her bedroom and finds a stranger watching her from the foot of the bed.

The intruder hands Sophie a letter and issues an ultimatum: the message is to be opened at her forthcoming party, in front of family and friends, at exactly 8:00 p.m. Any failure to comply will not end well.

Sophie can think of only one person who hates her enough to have hired a professional to menace her like this: her fiancé's ex-wife. What can the letter possibly contain? And why must it be read in front of everyone she loves? This will be no ordinary 40th party.

Sophie is not the only person holding a secret about the evening ahead. When the clock strikes eight, the course of several people's lives will be altered forever.

This Lisa Dawson story is twisty and written with capable vocabulary/prose. She provides plenty of well-timed foreshadowing, reasonably vivid description, unexpectedly captivating plotting.. and amazingly realistic amusing banter among long-suffering sisters 'Sophie'/'Alice'/'Imogen Gardner' and their cartoonishly overbearing mum. The book is pretty silly but quite entertaining.
Unfortunately, the events in the tale are just so implausible that my eyes rolled HARD far too frequently. I couldn't muster enough suspension of disbelief to accept the ludicrously bad decisions and constant nonsensical lies & secret-keeping. The book uses a dead-serious plot device (death threats + stalking) and includes story elements like infidelity + head injuries.. but almost plays like a slapstick sitcom.

I cannot blame any deficiencies on reader Julie Maisey, however. I found her natural cadence a touch rushed and her timbre occasionally shrill.. but her diction is spot-on, her voice-acting is wonderfully distinctive, and her understanding of the author's intended tone is near-psychic. The narration of this audiobook is outstanding.

Altogether, 'You Sent Me A Letter' merits 5/10-stars. It was a nice relatively short way to occupy a quiet afternoon for free, I suppose - but spend your Credit elsewhere should they ask for one. There are faaar better Psychological Thriller selections in the Audible library.

Great Suspense Novel

Love it! There were some periods where you weren't quite sure where it was heading or what the point was but even during those, the story was kept interestin. There was quite a few twists at the end and I have to be honest I think we wind up with a psychopath here. I definitely recommend this book Some British authors get a little bit too literary but this one is definitely mainstream and Dawson totally nailed this story.

Believable only if you suspend all thought of normalcy and reason. Horrifying to think there may be people in the world who consider this type of control as romantic.

Firstly, I really enjoyed the narration of this audio book. I am a sucker for an accent so I often will lean into any audio books with British, Aus, Irish etc narrators.

Next up the story. In the middle of the night Sophie wakes up to find a dangerous stranger in her bedroom. He delivers a threat, and a letter, to our main character. Instruction include reading it at her upcoming 40th birthday party the next evening.

The whole next day Sophie has to act normally while trying to uncover the mystery of who is threatening her, and why.

It was an enjoyable read, and I liked the dynamic between Sophie & her sister Alice especially. Although I couldn't root for Sophie much as a person, I was curious to get answers and finished this book within a few days.

Also if this book was written about me, it would have been short because I am too nosey and would have opened the letter right away.
