About this listen

Can you really conjure the life of your dreams? And what if you say the wrong spell?

It’s 2006. After a string of rejections from men who tell her they could never, ever, ever see her “that way,” awkward third-grade teacher Micaela Blei signs up for a mysterious course called “The Divine Feminine,” and feels like she might have found the key to the perfect life.

Turns out if you’re an A student, you can get an A in anything–including men. Pretty soon she’s learning to "conjure" her desires with vision boards, flirtations, and even a daring jumbotron viewing party for her, ahem ... "divine center." But the more Micaela aces her assignments, and watches her most unlikely dreams come true, the more she wonders: Is her perfect new life the real thing, or is there a hidden cost to getting everything she thought she wanted?

Women have put themselves through a lot of f*cked up situations to feel valued and lovable. This is a sharply funny, often painfully relatable true story featuring the great tropes of early 2000s romantic comedies: self-discovery, dating disasters, epic makeover montages, and finding love where you never thought to look.

Praise for Micaela’s storytelling:

"Ms. Blei’s story was magical and riveting ... in the end, you really wanted her to be your teacher." (Lara O’Brien, MV Times)

“Micaela is a storytelling wizard. She transforms the stuff of everyday life into profound stories that move people–and make them laugh.” (Tyler Wetherall, author of No Way Home: A Memoir of Life on the Run and Amphibian)

“Micaela Blei's storytelling is fresh, hilarious, and surprisingly moving.” (Sarah Moore, Theatre Is Easy)

Sincere and hilarious

A perfect listen from start to finish! I admire storytellers who can find humour in their vulnerability. I laughed out loud throughout the book and saw myself from time to time.

A funny, warm, fully captivating listen - I couldn't stop once I started

This memoir is the laugh-out-loud romantic comedy I wish I'd encountered years ago. I gasped, I giggled, I teared up, and was fully riveted as I listened to Micaela tell her story. At so many points, I found myself thinking "oh my gosh, how is she inside my head?!" as I related so deeply to her vulnerable, funny, thoughtful reflections on what it means to be a woman trying to date in your twenties and thirties.

My favorite line was "it was a medium kiss, but a perfect moment." This perfectly illustrates the yearning, the hoping, the desire for real connection meeting reality; Micaela captures so beautifully how to make sense of these snapshots of memories, both fond and bittersweet, in hindsight.

Micaela is an exceptional storyteller and I can't wait to read and hear every other story she has to tell the world.

Cute but pointless

Book was cute and funny, but I didn’t feel much was learned. A bit superficial.

The type of positivity and honesty I needed

I listened to this at the perfect moment in my life. The story gave me more pep to my step, had me smiling and laughing out loud, and made me think of what I wanted for my life and how I needed a more positive belief system about myself. This was a great listen--you won't be disappointed!

An enjoyable listen

I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did. It was the perfect listen for me in this moment - I consumed it all in one day. It’s an Indian memoir with lots of heart, and a well told story.
