About this listen
My name is James, but my mom’s the only person that can call me that. To everyone else, I’m JD — a struggling artist, working my fingers to the bone for my shot with one of the big comic book companies.
Oh, and I work nights, managing a dive called Judson’s Bar and Grill. I know: the dream life. Things were boring, disappointing, even. Until one fateful night when everything changed.
What happened first? An odd woman showed up in a booth while I was trying to close up for the night – rude, but on its own, not so weird. She was dressed in a kimono and had a sword in her lap; that part was a little strange.
What happened next? It turns out she’s a mistress at a magical academy, and she has been looking for me...(please pick up on my sarcasm here). Except then she proved it, and with just a few violent swings of her very real sword, she ensured that I didn’t have a job anymore. So, I more or less had to follow her into a scary, glowing portal.
Where did it take me? A surreal place called Zenith Academy, and a life I’d only ever dreamt of; a place I’ll learn how to cultivate mana and wield magic-like powers. And that is just the beginning. The tower imbues cultivators with visual prompts and game-like stats, making my new life feel like something straight out of a choose your own adventure novel. But it’s not all for nothing.
Evidently, they’ve been fighting a war for thousands of years, and I’ve just been drafted.

guy gets kidnapped from a bar that he ran
meets a drop dead gorgeous elf and then has to fight for his very survival and learn how to use magic.
standard harem litRPG but the voice actors bring the characters to life as always. And I'm a long for the ride. when's the next one?

Left me craving more
This was wild and exciting introduction to a wondrous world full of magic and monsters, Albeit one with a marred history full of near forgotten legends and veiled in half truths.
We see JD a regular nerdy guy who worked as a bartender to pay the bills but was a struggling artist at heart, who just happened to be plucked from obscurity by a remarkablely dressed fierce sword wielding woman with a radiant aura of what one could only assume a godess & forced to embark on a new path, into the unknown of a new world & the mysterious Zenith Academy. All while growing & cultivating bonds and friendships along the way!
For me this goes on the list of stories I wish I could enjoy for the first time again.
I hope you've enjoyed my short story.. I really like the world 😀

Awesome Narrators, Cool Characters, Slow Progress
I really liked the performance of the narrators. They are clear and tell the story with enthusiasm. They bring life to the characters and synergy between them.
The different characters in the story are interesting in their own way and not just the main ones in the party but secondary characters too.
The personalities seem very apparent, well defined and acted! The only issue I see on that front is with James (yes James... hahaha)... the problem is that he is introduced as shy and his background basically mentions that he was bullied and tropes likes that... but all of a sudden he's thrusted into a fantasy universe and confidence just RADIATES from him for... reasons? (but oh well... I don't mind it too much...... I mean it's great! (please keep writing submissi... I mean.. shy elven characters!))
I chuckle at some of the insults James throws at the douchbag elves during the story... they really are big bags of rotting d*cks... as they call them at some point in the story but to be completely honest, the side plot of every elf being a douche feels overused when you reach a certain point in the story.
While the story has had some progress and the action starts quickly enough, I feel like there's not much progress being done on the "Main Quest"... this book is definitely an introductory element to the story where the characters meet, get to know each other, establish their training/farming routine and... huh... kick some elven butts.
The book is LitRPG, so I'm not going to comment on the time it takes to regurgitate all the info on stats and loots... that's what LitRPG is about, no?
Though I found it funny that they've been talking about "Cultivation" and "Meridians"... as I've just previously listened to Bruce Sentar's "A Mage's Cultivation" Series of AudioBooks which use the exact same terms. (oh yeah and side note, ironically, Jessica Threet narrates Bruce's "Dragon's Justice" series too... well the females characters... she's great!)..
Personally, in my honest opinion, this book is not bad, it's an introduction to the world and the characters... Book 2 is what will define if the story gets better or not.
I enjoyed this Book 1 mainly for its characters and how they "cultivate" their relationships.
I have already started Book 2.
