卒論を控えた大学生である「私」は、小料理屋「忍ぶ川」で働く志乃に好意を寄せる。何回か通ううちに、二人がともに、深川と縁が深いことがわかり実現した深川での散策で、同じような痛ましい家族関係であることをさらに知ることとなり、思いは深まっていく。志乃の父親が危篤との知らせに、どうしても父に貴方を見せたい、見せて看取りたいという志乃。お寺の古いお堂での仮住まいで、志乃の父は「よろしゅう、お願い申します」と最後の言葉を残して逝った。雪降りしきる「私」の郷里での、両親と姉とで挙げたささやかな結婚式に、長い間見失っていた幸福の灯りがともるのを二人は目の当たりにする。雪国では、何も身にまとわず全裸で床に入るのが習わしだ。遠く馬橇（ばそり）の音を聞きながら、生と死を織り重ねるように生きてきたお互いの肌の温かさに、「私」と志乃は、それぞれ新しい生活へ思い馳せるのであった。
