31歳の若さで、肺結核で没した梶井基次郎は、簡潔な描写と詩情豊かな澄明な文体の心境小説的小品群をを残している。ここでは、その代表的小品を7篇収録した。
猫の耳、猫の爪を眺めながら湧きあがる空想に楽しむ「愛撫」。「えたいの知れない不吉な塊」に心を始終圧えつけてられている「私」が、好きな檸檬を買って丸善で爆弾のように爆発させる様を想像して気持ちが緩むという「檸檬」。長い間暮らした山間の療養地で暮らした時に感じた、深い闇の中で味わう安息などを描く「闇の絵巻」。海辺で溺死したK君と、前夜言葉を交わした際の様子を描く「Kの昇天」。桜の樹の下には屍体が埋まっている! 」と、桜の花の美しさを思いながらそう確信する「桜の樹の下には」。ある晩春の午後、村の街道に沿った土堤の上で日を浴びていた時、動かないでいる巨きな雲の変化を眺めながら湧き上がる思いを描く「蒼穹」。山間の村の杉林の中にある筧の水音に惹かれるという「筧の話」。
