    Best Practice for Leadership Training

    From Gabrielle

At the end of every summer, we host a resume and cover letter workshop for our staff, helping them translate their camp experience into professional skills. This 1-2 hour session offers templates, practical guidance, and advice on framing their summer accomplishments in a way employers outside the camp world can understand. It’s a simple but impactful way to prepare our counselors and staff for future opportunities.

We also promote the workshop to families during camper drop-offs, and the response is overwhelmingly positive. Parents love seeing us invest in their kids’ professional development, and it adds value to the overall camp experience. For our staff, the workshop not only builds confidence but also strengthens their connection to camp, increasing the likelihood of their return next year.

This initiative has been a win-win for everyone. If you’re part of a camp or similar organization, consider hosting a post-season career workshop. It’s a small effort that leaves a lasting impact.

    Best Practice for Leadership Training

    From Beth

Supporting staff through goal setting during check-ins shows you care about their personal and professional growth. By encouraging them to set short- and long-term goals and revisiting these throughout the season, you help them stay focused and motivated. Taking the time to discuss not just their goals but the steps they’re taking to achieve them fosters a sense of accountability that feels personal, not just a job requirement. This process empowers them to reflect on what they want, while your encouragement and recognition of their progress inspire confidence and pride. With clear expectations, open communication, and a culture of celebration, you create a supportive environment where staff feel valued and connected, making camp an even more rewarding experience for everyone.

    Best Practice for Leadership Training

    From Donnie

Retaining is recruiting. If you're new, and it's hard out there and it's like, how do I retain? I would say conduct an experience audit, see what the experience is like. Ultimately retaining is recruiting because students are looking for people in places that give them confidence and clarity about their experience and trajectory. The experience that you're offering can give them more confidence and clarity. If you can retain, you'll find it much, much easier to recruit.

Going back to the interview question. I forgot to say this, don’t use hypothetical questions. Hypothetical questions give you hypothetical answers. I think just really knowing what your staff are, like what they're hoping to gain and what, what growth that they want to have, whether it's personal growth, professional growth, really speaks a lot about how much we care for them, and then if we circle back to that and help them.

    Best Practice for Leadership Training

    From Ruby

I want to share something that I know has been on this podcast before, but it has come back around to me recently so during the summer. This past summer, I had the opportunity to drive buses for a summer camp and had done those over a few occasions throughout the summer. And just a couple weeks ago I got a thank you note from them hand written to thank me for my time. Even though this was a paid gig, the fact that they took the time to physically write that note with pen and paper really meant a lot and makes me want to do that type of gig again. I encourage you all to think about who some of the helpers are that are in your world and take a few moment to write them a note. Giving someone a physical thank you note allows them to post it on their refrigerator or somewhere in their home where they will see it and think of you.
