    Gungi is one of the most famous literary works by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. A Nobel Prize Winner in the field of Literature, he is probably one of the most famous Indian personalities who has been recognized all over the world.

    Gungi narrates the story of life's struggle of a dumb girl named Subha, who is born in poverty with two elder sisters. While her father loves her a lot, her mother believes its because of her own sins that Subha turned out to be like this and they are keen to get her married off somehow.

    This short story brings to life the struggles that specially-abled people, especially girls, face when born into poor families.

    Once in Calcutta, one day she was heavily dressed in new clothes and jewelry by her mother. The boy came to see her finally along with his friends and relatives. Subha was crying inconsolably which helped her get the approval of boy's relatives. And she didn't have to even say a word.

    Once the marriage ceremony was complete, her parents returned back to their home. But everyone found out that Subha is dumb within a week but no one understood that she never lied to anyone. The boy found a new suitable match and got remarried again.

    Subhashni is growing into an adult now and still trying to make sense of the world around her. Her parents are getting eager to get her married now and other villagers are also started to make noise. Vanikanth once went away for some days and when he came back, he asked everyone to pack their bags to go to Calcutta. Subha will eagerly look at her parents to get some clue but no one told her anything.

    Then one day, Pratap told her that he has heard that she is being taken to Calcutta for her marriage. This shook Subha and then the next day she started crying in front of her father. Subha bid goodbye to her cow friends while asking mother earth to not let her go.

    Subha has found a friend in humans as well. He was the younger son Pratap of their neighbors. He was considered useless by his parents and other family members. Pratap loved catching fish and used to do so every day. And that was when he will end up meeting Subha. A dumb person is the best companion while trying to fish and hence he liked her company a lot.

    Subha also wished to have some magical powers with which she could impress Pratap and take his focus away from fishing.
