Middlespace: The Rebels Attack, And Then The Other Side Attacks As Well

Written by: Paul Lieberstein
Narrated by: Will Forte, John Malkovich, full cast
  • Summary

  • Starship Captain George Cottonhammer (Will Forte), bored by his job, stops his ship in middle space and floats, doing nothing. He refuses to answer distress calls, dodges anything that smacks of work, chooses instead to focus on his love life and his idea dujour - opening an intergalactic burger franchise. And while he perfects the art of killing time, his crew moves from baffled to annoyed, to furious, to borderline mutinous. But when an ignored intergalactic distress call turns out to be a trap, the limits of how high someone can fail upwards are stretched, and the captain must, to his dismay, do something.

Fantastic Fun

I absolutely loved this, the narration is funny and good pace to it. Very easy to laugh out loud to the story.

Took a bit to warm to it but...

It really took off after one of the characters created a foil for the captain. I don't want to spoil anything but the character that begins to challenge the captain's absurdity is exactly what this series needed and creates a hilarious contrast that I really enjoyed.

My kind of humor. Will Forte is perfect for this role. Malkovich narrating.... come on! So funny. I need to find more audio like this.

Can't take more than 2 chapters of this

The narraration, the acting, and the production of this audiobook are all very well done. Some of the other reviews indicate that it gets better when one of the other characters challenges the Captain's absurdity. For myself, I have slogged through 2 chapters and I just can't see any point to continuing to listen to it. The material itself, in my experience, has the feel of what would be produced by 5 or 6 drunken college frat boys with time on their hands who decided to write an audiobook for extra money, and who somehow had the money to get it excellently produced with top-shelf actors.
I suppose I was looking for brilliant satire, like the works of Yahtsee Croshaw. So far, this isn't brilliant, nor can I detect satire.
If you decide to buy this one, maybe you will have a better experience if you start at chapter 3. As for myself, I am bailing out after 2 chapters, and would not recommend it as a purchase.
