After clearing high school in 1983, he went to Nairobi for a year where he met one of his greatest mentors, the late Michael Kakai Kilonzo of the Les Kilimambogo Brothers Band.A year later, he had mastered how to play guitar. He teamed up with the late Joseph Mutaiti Ndeto under the then Super Kaiti Boys Band where he strummed the solo guitar and did backup vocals. Others in the band included Katui Nguzi [bass guitar], Alex Mutua [drums and percussions] and Vincent Kioko [rhythm guitar] . He thereafter joined Ngoleni Brothers Band in 1986 playing alongside Dickson Mutuku Mulwa [guitarist, composer and singer] and Sila Munyao [backup vocals]. In 1987, he transitioned to Kyanganga Boys Band then led by Peter Mwambi Wakulikya where he joined David Kasyoki Wamutoo [solo guitarist and vocalist] and Prince Maingi [rhythm guitar and backup vocalist].
