Seaside Pod Review (A Queen Podcast)

Written by: Kevin Brown Randy Woods
  • Summary

  • Kev and Randy take to the mics once a week to talk about a song from the catalogue of the enigmatic, brilliant, and sometimes flawed rock legends Queen. Each week a song will be chosen at random so that the boys won't know what track they'll be reviewing. Kev comes into the podcast as a Queen afficionado, while Randy is a more casual fan, but has a huge wealth of knowledge about recording, performing, and music in general. At the end of each episode, both will either upvote or downvote the song and we'll take to social media to see what the listeners think!

Did you know that Randy went to hitman school? How about the fact that Kev feels that consistency is key when it comes to being an asshole. We also discuss what type of music a psychopath might listen to and what music we've been listening to other than Queen. The Cardinal is complaining about football again and Kev is frankly getting a little tired of his whining! I don't know if this partnership is going to last!

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "This song is brill" or possibly, "Hitman school"

Today's episode looks at a Freddie song that was assisted by Brian and John and taken from the Innuendo album; "The Hitman"

NOTE: Skip forward to 23:47 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The song at the end of the episode is a very rough mix of Kev, his brother Dan, and his Dad, John, playing a White Stripes song back in 2016. It was recorded remotely and then shoved into Dropbox to mix. Very badly. This one should probably go to the Cardinal at some point to be reworked... but anyway, it's a bit of lo-fi fun and it's titled "Effect and Cause" and you can find it here : https://youtu.be/SRRD-m43xrg

If you want to listen to the song The Delegator's brilliant cover of Nowhere to Run you can find it here: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=E3p7yDec38o and if you want to watch the clip Kev was talking about of Mike Portnoy playing Shake It Off, you'll find that here: https://youtu.be/cHl_gsd0OR0

You know that saying "Go big or go home"? What if you were to do both? Well, that's what Queen attempted with the final track on The Miracle. They fired up the old Kurzweil, made Roger play a real drum kit and, if you can believe it, actually sat in a room as a band and recorded this one together. One of our listeners really sticks the boot in, so we return it in kind, and Randy is pondering an SPR move into the political sphere. It's not a good idea. At all. Plus, Ruddy has a question for us and we think you'll like it!

If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Not sure how I feel about the old Kurzweil" or possibly, "I hope Freddie thought it was worth it"

Today's episode looks at the final track on The Miracle, with Freddie wondering, "Was It All Worth It".

NOTE: Skip forward to 21:54 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin.

The music at the end of the episode is taken from UK show, The Last Leg and features Alex Horne and The Horne Section singing a soulful, nostalgic song about the simple country life. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/74UZNexK8a4

We're gonna test the theory that you guys will listen to us talk about anything..... over lunch.

Episode one is recorded on location at the rough and ready (and perfectly cromulent) Amigos Cantina at 806 Dufferin Ave, Saskatoon. Tex Mex was eaten, craft beer was consumed, and we set the world mainly to rights! It was bitterly, bitterly cold the day we went so being inside with warm food and warm company was a real blessing!

The music at the end of the episode is Randy's fever dream; "Lunch" from the Randy Woods Band's second album, Soul Hammer. You can listen to it here: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=g_WmpRVO2-s&list=OLAK5uy_lEMqgV14pku-lI3hwP8kcZsRl8ncR6jMY
