Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, DC constitutes the first foreign leader to meet with President Donald Trump since his inauguration. The consequences of their relationship cannot be understated. And, Trump is broadcasting important signals.
With Israel on one side and various Islamic and Arab regimes on the other, some endemically committed to Israel’s literal destruction, Trump—in his first term—made clear whose side America was on in the Middle East: He squarely put America on Israel’s side—and made policy decisions that brooked no doubt.
The Middle East does not have to be seen as two scorpions in a bottle, with Israel as one scorpion and her enemies the other, each pacified here and there, each sanctioned here and there. It can be one bottle and one scorpion, a scorpion that needs to be de-poisoned. Being squarely behind our ally, and broadcasting that, both instructs and proves the path to peace—avoiding both sides-ism. President Trump, refreshingly, understands that.
