Raylee’s death was infuriatingly preventable if only CPS and the family court judge hadn’t ignored countless abuse complaints from Raylee’s mom and school staff.In this episode, we’ll go over the results of Raylee’s autopsy and the shocking number of medications she was prescribed. I’ll talk about how and why Marty Browning Jr., Julie Titchenell, and Sherie Titchenell put just Raylee, one of four kids in the home, through years of abuse and neglect. I’ll go through the shocking statements one of Julie’s children made to a counselor, cementing the three adults’ criminal charges.     In Episode 4, I told you about Raylee Browning: a little girl who died on December 26, 2018. Although she was covered with injuries from head to toe, her cause of death was a septic infection from untreated pneumonia. The three adults in the home—Raylee’s father, his girlfriend, and her sister—were charged in her death.

    That episode barely scratched the surface. Now, I’m retelling Raylee’s full story with the help of her mom, Janice Wriston, who fought for Raylee’s entire eight years to protect her daughter from the girl’s own father, Marty Browning Jr. The way the press told the story, Marty was a negligent father who merely failed to protect his daughter. The truth about Marty is far darker than that.

    This is the story of a sweet, loving little girl whose mom called her Sunshine. It’s also a story about the horrific abuse Marty inflicted on first Janice and then Raylee, and how he managed to become entwined with a pair of sisters just as narcissistic and abusive as himself, ultimately leading to his only child’s painful and unnecessary death.

    This is part one of the harrowing story of Raylee Browning.

    On the morning of February 28, 2020, a young mother summoned Milwaukee police to her home, where her 4-year-old daughter, Autumn Horak, was unresponsive. Autumn, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was found wearing only a diaper and covered in injuries, including multiple bruises, a burn, and even a human bite mark.

    On January 8, 2021, 27-year-old Destani Neel called 911, reporting that her boyfriend’s daughter was having trouble breathing. Although two-year-old Arianna Starkey was rushed to the hospital, she never regained consciousness, and she took her last breath two days later. Destani—a mother herself—had a story prepared for investigators, but her details kept changing, and it was immediately apparent that Arianna’s death was not an accident.

    This is the story of a little girl who loved her big brother, her pink boots, and having tea parties with her Nana. It’s also the story of a mother who took out all of her frustrations on her boyfriend’s innocent toddler—and a man whose intervention could have saved his daughter’s life.

    From time to time, instead of covering an individual child’s story, I tackle a broader topic, such as my past episodes about hot car deaths and medical child abuse. While the topic of today’s episode doesn’t necessarily intersect with that of child abuse and neglect, it definitely intersects with this podcast’s purpose: to protect children.

    For this episode, I spoke with Christi Brown, the executive director of the Judah Brown Project. Christi is a mom who always thought she was protecting her kids from the dangers of water until her three-year-old son, Judah, died in 2016 from an accidental drowning that happened in the blink of an eye.
