Was 1994 the greatest year in movies?

Almost three decades ago, an absolutely hella fly year in entertainment took hold in 1994. Classics like The Lion King, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Interview with the Vampire, True Lies, The Ref, Speed, and others hit theaters. Not to be outdone, Friends, Seinfeld, and ER took over our television sets. It was a prime time for entertainment.

Much has changed since then, but what is even more interesting is how much remains the same. For this special episode, we’re not only going to look back at the year in film and television – complete with Breaking News segments direct from the year itself – we are going to settle the longstanding debate on if 1994 truly IS the greatest year in movie history! With the magic of technology and time travel, we hope you enjoy yet another in our annual series of Hollywood Outsider Time Capsule podcasts.

Is it simply pretty pictures, or is it because of the world of animation contained within? Overall, what is it with animated parenting and why do kids love cartoons so much?

  • Why Can't Fans Be More Positive?
    Jun 5 2024

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we decided it was time to discuss the constant negativity surrounding entertainment these days. Media sites and fandom in general seems to have become less of a positive thing and more likely incites others to clash and fight over every differing opinion. However, it wasn't so long ago that our differences made us relatable and brought us together. So what happened? Why can't fans be more positive?

Of course, that's not all as we also debate an insane comparison from Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos using Barbie and Oppenheimer as reference points, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery gets a fantastic cast, and more.

    • (0:00 – 11:32) Opening | Entertainment News: Netflix's Ted Sarandos, Knives Out sequel cast

  • TV's Most Controversial Series Finales
    May 29 2024
What are the most debated series finales on TV?

LOST, Dexter, How I Met Your Mother, Game of Thrones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Sopranos, Seinfeld, and The Shield. Each of these shows have one thing in common and it’s not just people dying. They each created a massive divide among fans, and also between fans and creators, when their series finally ended. So we decided to head into the past and revisit some of these finales, and exclude any extension of these series that might now exist, and discuss if they are truly that bad? Let's debate the TV's most controversial series finales!

Editor's Note: This is specifically for TV shows that had an intended series finale rather than an abrupt, forced conclusion to the show.

  • Movie Spin-Offs We Need, Forgiving Kevin Spacey, Cannes, IF, and The Strangers
    May 22 2024

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, with Furiosa hitting theaters, it's time to look at what we've been robbed of over the years as fans: what are the movie spin-offs we actually NEED?! So many franchises erode into sequel after sequel when there are fantastic characters withering away on the vine just waiting for their chance to shine. They deserve their own spin-off, so why haven't we gotten one yet?

There is so much more! We also review IF and The Strangers: Chapter 1, dive into Cannes 2024 and this odd practice of 10 minutes standing ovations, debate if ticket prices should come down, and then finally a hot-button topic: is it time to forgive Kevin Spacey? Listen to this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast and find out!

  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Lord of the Rings Returns, Streaming Bundles, The Crow Turns 30
    May 14 2024

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we are headed back to the land Charlton Heston built. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place generations after the events of "War". This time, a group of civilized primates are viciously attacked, which leaves one of their own - Noa - to set off on a journey to save his clan. The less you know of the story the better, but you can rest assured that director Wes Ball understands the respect the last trilogy carries with it, and this film honors both the heart and depth those films exacted. Humanity versus the lives of all those animals we force to do our bidding, and how the memories of our heroes can even be distorted into a manipulative tactic for dictatorship. All of this and more is on the table as we discuss Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

That's not all though! Entertainment news gets a once over as Lord of the Rings brings both Andy Serkis AND Gollum back, Roger Corman passes away, Disney merges with Max in the weirdest of ways, and Brandon Lee's The Crow celebrates its 30th anniversary.

    May 8 2024

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we head back to a debate that has been raging for years, but seems to have rounded a corner back to where we started: which is the best way to watch TV nowadays, binging or weekly?
