The Lufthansa heist, which took place on December 11, 1978, at John F. Kennedy International Airport, was the largest cash and diamond heist in U.S. history. The mob stole $5 million in cash and $875,000 in diamonds, which would be worth about $26 million today. The heist was planned and executed by a group of low-level criminals and the story was later immortalized in Martin Scorsese's 1990 film Goodfellas.
