The Phobic Flyer

Written by: Andy Clarke - The Phobic Flyer
  • Summary

  • I had a huge flight phobia (aerophobia/aviophobia) which I became aware of in my 20's. I started learning to fly on the 2nd February 2013 at the age of 48, and it took me to the 19th October 2020 until I finally passed my UK PPL Skill Test, 133 1/2 flying hours later. I am now a qualified Private Pilot and have obtained my Night Rating and now working towards obtaining my UK Instrument Rating (Restricted). I am living proof that it is truly possible to overcome your fear of flying, regardless of how frightened you are.

Would love to take my grandchildren to see Santa in Lapland, but driving on snow scares me. The idea of landing on snow and ice is terrifying. How can that be safe? Can mobile phones, iPads etc. really cause an issue to planes? Does it matter what type of clothes I wear on a plane?

I would love to travel with my son who has Aspergers syndrome, but I'm really worried how he would cope with the airport and flight. What support, if any, is there for people with disabilities?
